Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to learn more about a specific
nursing theory and apply that theory to a present day healthcare issue. Theory
provides nurses with a framework from which to approach their work. From
understanding the progression of novice to expert, providing guidance when
working with families, to identifying and prioritizing the needs of clients,
theory provides nurses with a means to discuss, conceptualize, and structure
their work with clients. The assignment is intended to encourage you to
develop further skills such as: effective access of library and other resources,
critical evaluation of sources, the use of logic, coherent presentation of a well
substantiated position, and the writing of scholarly papers.
Description: A 6-page* paper that will provide students an opportunity to explore a
nursing theory that speaks to them and discuss how this theory/model could
influence a selected healthcare issue today (*any content beyond the six
pages will not be evaluated).
Instructions: Students will select a nursing theory or model and a healthcare issue that you
may encounter in practice (options for both will be provided in class). Within
the specified page limit students will: 1) Describe the theory/model of the
chosen theorist and summarizing its key elements; 2) Define the chosen
health care issue and propose ways which the chosen theory/model might be
applied to the selected healthcare issue today. You may choose to focus
your discussion more specifically with an example in order to directly apply
the theory. Papers must include an introduction (including thesis statement),
body, conclusion, and utilize a minimum of 5 peer-reviewed resources. A
marking rubric for this assignment will be posted on the course page.
