University of California Medieval Period Catharism and Heresy Research Paper I have a 10 page draft due on Monday, June 1st. The paper needs to be on the topic of Catharism. So far I have created an annotated bibliography with sources for the paper, and also have a portion of the Introduction written. I am attaching the prompt and requirements. It is relatively vague, but the professor put an emphasis on the paper having a thesis that can be argued. You will be able to see in my uploaded work the angle I am going for.
Here is a google docs link to my annotated bibliography with notes from him: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WEw9okYakYgT67xBJKH0lfnnIv5EtitpWg8ruT8tZeY/edit#bookmark=id.gjdgxs

Instructions:
• Choose at least two primary sources. You do not have to use a whole source but you
should use a chapter, section or other division of the text that makes sense.
• You must have a thesis statement about your source that you then prove in your paper.
• The paper should be 10 pages long.
• You must use at least three secondary sources to support your thesis. These can be either
books, chapters from edited volumes, or articles. You can find articles on JSTOR or
search by keyword on the UCLA library page.
• You must cite everything that is not your own idea. Provide a bibliography of all the
sources you use. You may choose between either the Chicago or the MLA style. It is
important that your citations are consistent no matter what style you choose.
Suggestions for Writing the Thesis:
• Before writing your thesis, look carefully at your primary source. Ask: who wrote this?
What language was it originally written in? When was it written? Who was the audience
supposed to be? What was the author’s motivation in writing it?
• Think of some significant social, political, economic, or cultural features that your source
might relate to. (This context will come from the secondary sources)
• Make sure your thesis is something that could potentially be disproven. That means that
your thesis cannot be something like, “My paper will demonstrate that religion was very
important to medieval Europeans.”
Citations
•
Note that you will have to provide citations for your work. Specific formatting will be
addressed in class, but make sure you keep a record of where you found every fact or
quotation, whether from primary or secondary sources, that you include in your paper.
