Study from this week:

Respond to the following questions:

A catastrophic view of earth history and geology is based on the influence of the Great Flood. Provide evidence for, or against, the occurrence of a global flood. Lines of discussion might concern: Where did the water come from?, Could a single event explain the geologic strata?, What did the continents look like before and after?, Would mountains at the time of Noah have been the same height as they are now?, Would the water have affected nuclear decay rates used in radiometric dating?, Where did the water go afterwards?

My original post:
Genesis 7:17-19
For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark
high above the earth. The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on
the surface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the
entire heavens were covered.
The great flood is one of the theories that can help explain the earth’s geology. Although
scientists over the years have disputed theory and cited lack of evidence of such an event,
geological scholars continue to unearth evidence that indeed there was a great flood albeit
regional. Montgomery (2012) reports the findings of Bretz a geologists which indicate that some
of the occurrences in the earth’s geology can only be attributed to a great flood. For example in
the scablands, Bretz discovered that although the landscape is desolate, there were potholes that
were located hundreds of feet above what was the modern river. Further, some waterfalls could
only be explained through a great flood. Some of the other discoveries include basalt cliffs ways
above the levels of the river levels that have been recorded which could only be explained
through a great flood. The geologist argued that this landscape and the deposits that are found in
the Oregon region could only be the result of an enormous flood. Trimarchi (2020) on the other
hand reports the findings of Robert Ballard an explorer who discovered ancient shorelines and
the underwater valley beneath the Black Sea. They also discovered fossils of freshwater species
that are now extinct pointing to a great flood. Although there are still questions on the source of
volumes of water that caused the great flood and where it went, geologist continues to unearth
evidence that explains the geologic strata and landscape.

In the book of Matthew 24:38, it was written, “ For the days before the flood, people were
eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and
they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away….”.
This is similar to how hurricane Katrina came and wiped out the people of New Orleans and
their property.
On August 29, 2005, a category 3 hurricane swept through the city of New Orleans. When
dealing with a category 3 hurricane, there is a great deal of damage, because it is considered to
be one of the strongest hurricanes out there. What made this flood so devastating was the levee
that was put in place around the city to prevent flooding, failed to do its job. When the levee
broke, the flooding swept through the city like a thief in the night. The outcome of too severe.
Over $60 million in property damages. There were people on rooftops, praying to be rescued
before the water reached the top of their homes. A lot of lives and homes were lost during that
time. It became the US’s most destructive hurricane.
Where New Orleans sits, the river deposits are the most active. Because this is to be so, the city
built the levee to prevent any major flooding that could destroy the town, just as it had in the
1927 great flood. When the levee failed to do its job, it caused major and critical problems in
not only New Orleans, but also in neighboring states. When the hurricane hit the gulf, the
water from the ocean created a tidal wave that flooded New Orleans and some of
Mississippi. This event can cause a geologic stratum.

It’s hard to visualize the earth totally covered with water in the sense of the great flood, and not to mention it’s a
pretty scary thought but the bible says “The world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished” (II Peter
3:6). Maybe it indeed did and in fact this great flood had a hand in eroding and sculpting our “new” earth. The earth,
we know, is covered by approximately 70% water with 97% in our oceans. We also know from science that before
we had the seven separate continents, they were joined in one big land mass (Pangea). Did the great flood cover the
mountains and were they the same height today as they were back then? Genesis 7: 18-20 says 18 The waters rose
and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. 19 They rose greatly on the earth,
and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a
depth of more than fifteen cubits. Maybe this flood brought up new mountain ranges as well. Mountain ranges such
as the Himalayan range and others have been known to been formed with sediments from the ocean floor. I believe
the waters came up from the oceans and then went back down into the ocean and in the process helped to mold the
earth into a similar look as we have today, although it is also continuously changing. I believe it is possible to have
another great flood, however the bible also states how God has promised that will not happen again.
