The One Out of a million choices— Resistance
There is a saying from Marxism that where theres is oppression, there is resistance. This reaction
can be applied to any period of history from any countries, let alone the collectivistic countries.
However, the ways of resistance haven’t been surprising to me until I learned the history of
Mexicans. They had Barrios and mutual aids to resist the outside force from
Americans. They are still using the way to resist the racism and White force, which now it turns
to gangs. Sometimes, it can confusing that if it is we, the people, made history, or the history
have made us. By reading the book Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez, I have a little
knowledge to answer this question, I think we can make history and we can also let history make
us. It applies to all; it apply to the involvement of gangs. There is no one, or we can say,
everyone to blame for the involvement of gangs. The environment and education lead them to
the one out of a million choices in their lives, but occasionally, love break through the hard stone
and lead the way out.
The history of the racialization of Mexican immigrants lay the foundation of their choices. At the
early time, Mexicans were labeled as lazy, riotous, and violent even though they should be
treated as the same as the Americans. Then the were employed by the Americans because they

offered higher income. This does not change anything, but a more harsh lives. They did not have
the protection from labor law as Americans did. They did not want to return to Mexico, because
they thought they have a little hope there. With all their attention on how to make a living in
America, they forgot that the racism was eroding them. There are many problems the outside
media can address on Mexicans, on those group of people who joined gangs, they will never look
into the history to find out what caused these problem, it was not their concern. However, until
the gangs became a stubborn issue on the street and they increasingly expanded, people started to
pay close attention to the violence. In the Introduction of Rodriguez’s book, Always Running, he
said that “the expansion of spiritual- based practices and the intensifying debate on how to
address violence in this country- have far outweighed the bad.” (Rodríguez, xi) But people
never think of this violence in a way that to always address the problems and never looking into
the problems makes the violence. Rodriguez also paraphrased Henry David Thoreau that
“thousands are hacking at the branches of the problem; few are working at the
root.” (Rodríguez, xvi) The root is the history.
To convert this concept in a specific life story, which is Rodriguez’s narrate, The “roots” creates
his physical environment and the prejudice from the outside forces and assimilation from inside
are the factors of the violence.

place quotation marks when using direct wording from book. Failure to do so constitutes
plagiarism. Each paragraph must have at least one citation, with the exception of the
introduction and conclusion.
ESSAY PROMPT:
In his memoir, Luis Rodríguez walks us through his life from childhood through young
adulthood. The harsh realities around him shape his world view:
“By the time I turned 18 years old, 25 of my friends had been killed by rival
gangs, police, drugs, car crashes and suicides.” (Rodríguez, 4).
Rodríguez sees himself as “lucky” because he was able to escape death, prison, or a crime driven
existence. He, unlike many of his peers, was able to get out—to escape.
Young men, especially young men of color, in improvised neighbors are often lured into gang
life. For some, partaking in gang activities is not an option—often times they are forced to and
failing to do so could result in a beating or death. There are few alternatives or positive outlets
for them and consequently gangs gain the upper hand.
According to Rodríguez, who is ultimately to blame for his involvement in gangs and who/what
does he credit for “saving” him from gangs? Why are gangs so appealing to some?
