UCI Evicted Poverty and Profit in The American City Annotated Bibliography At the minimum, your paper should be 1500 words (including in-text citations but not bibliography.) You should aim to include at least 1 primary source (perhaps from the primary source assignment); 1 multimodal source (photo, graph, chart, etc.: don’t worry too much about this yet; we’ll be discussing multimodality today in class), 1 academic source, and 1 popular source. (Remember that you’ll need to use between 6-8 sources in the final draft, but 4 is okay for now.) You should also have a Works Cited page for all the sources you cite in your paper, and a separate annotated bibliography in which you evaluate and assess these sources. Your Prospectus should come at the beginning of the document. Please make sure that multimodal elements work: links should be live, graphics should be clear. Remember that this is a rhetorical situation. You want to engage and delight the reader. Clear, legible, well-composed writing with obvious paragraphs and through-lines are a must. Every paragraph should have a thesis-support sentence. Don’t worry about making a big conclusion just yet. Just make your points, with support. Please work on an academic title, which offers the formal construction of an argument or at least introduces the dynamic of the problem-failure thesis of your essay. No headlines, humor or puns. An academic or scholarly title generally has a colon separating the nature of the problem and its cause. You will also want to appropriately offer, introduce key words, subject, experts, and key players. Feel free to include an epigraph but not one that is too easy or general (Benjamin Franklin!) but instead perhaps something you have located in your research which points to and emphasizes the theme of the essay and echoes your “promise to the reader.” PreviousNext The main cause of eviction has been the high costs of housing. Housing in the past two
decades was affordable. As a matter of fact, housing costs were very low in the year 2000 to
2006. This was the time when banks and real estate partners worked together to offer mortgages
at very low-interest rates while utilizing derivatives. This made many people huy houses on
mortgages. However, the unregulated derivate led to a financial crisis experienced in 2008
Homeowners had to give up their homes when the 8 trillion dollar housing bubble burst. House
mortgages were taken at the time sunk and this led to many people being evicted since the
interests had hiked up by more than 25% (Desmond, 36).

All of them? Be cautious of using
hyperbolic language.
The Great Recession of 2007 which lasted for two years, therefore, has been the root of
all the eviction problems. Eviction resulted in poverty. To see how this effect links to the cause,
it is important to understand what happened after eviction. When people we evicted, they were
not able to find other places to rent and hence they had to store their belonging in storage
facilities. Since they also did not have a stable jot, they could not be able to pay storage fees and
more than 65% of evicted families throughout the United States lost their belonging. This made
them he homelow and poverty struck. To date, they are still not able to find places to live and
they find themselves living in poor suburbs like refugees in their own countries. Despite the
efforts by the government to provide housing vouchers, research shows that only 1 out of
families who apply for housing vouchers gets it (Scobie, 13). Affordable housing bill was also
teen passed in Congress where tenants have the upper hand to claim their apartment provided
they pay their rent three days past due. However, because of corruption, this bill has not bome
any fruit. Still, eviction is still a major cause of poverty.

84)). This statement may seem to show that racism also has got a lot to do with eviction. Yes, it
does but racism as a cause of poverty has been discussed over the years but eviction has not
Prior to the year 2007, housing was affordable and many people acquired houses via
mortgages using bank and real estate derivatives at a very affordable rate. However, when the
Great Recession struck in 2007 until 2009, house prices including rent and mortgages rose by
over 25% making it unaffordable to most low-income Americans and this made over 65% of
low earning families to be evicted (USA Catholic Review, 17). To date, more than half of the
families that were evicted according to Soderberg (290) have not been able to settle down again.
They have not been able to find affordable housing units and apartments for rent. This is because
fewer landlords are willing to offer a house for rent to a person who has been previously evicted

for failure to pay rent since they fear the same might happen. In essence, the problem of eviction
is caused by the failure of tenants to pay rent and has resulted in more than 2 million fasilica
living in poverty and causing poverty-related problems such as diseases, child labor, domestic
violence, malnutrition, wemployment, and poor infrastructure which negatively affects the
children and youth of the affected
families.
Thesis (Presented in the last paragraph above)
In essence, the problem of eviction is caused by the failure of tenants to pay rent and has
resulted in more than 2 million families living in poverty and languishing in poverty related
problems such as diseases, child labor, domestic violence, malnutrition, unemployment, and poor
infrastructure, all of which negatively affects the children and youth of the affected families.
Hannah Elizabeth Dow
It seemed like you were going
somewhere else with this, while the
inability to pay rent may lead to
eviction, are there not underlying
causes that prevent these tenants
from paying rent? And if so, would
these not therefore be the causes
that actually (if indirectly) lead to
eviction? Rather than blame the
ones you identify as victims, it would
be more persuasive to place the
blame on these external factors.
