What topic have you chosen and why?

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is my preferred topic. DACA is an immigration policy that provides temporary protection from deportation to young people who arrived in the United States before the age of 16. These persons are called Dreamers, and most of them, have no memories of any other country except the US. I have chosen the topic since I have interacted with many Dreamers and I have come to appreciate that they share in the American Dream like any other American. Some hold important leadership positions at the university. However, their Trumps threatens their presence in USA.

What is your knowledge level on this topic? What information will you need to research? What readings from our syllabus do you need to explore?

I know that the program has benefited close to 800,000 people since it was introduced in 2011. Another 1 million people qualify but have not applied.  President stopped the program in 2017, but the order has been challenged in the Supreme Court. Most DACA beneficiaries are from Central and South America. The president has stopped the program but the Supreme Court is yet to make a determination. However, I need more information about the legal and legislative issues. I also need to investigate why the program does not provide a pathway to full partnership. I also need to consider the concerns and fears of all stakeholders so that my op-ed can be as objective as possible.

What are rules around submitting op-eds for both media outlets you are considering? Have they published op-eds on immigration, or your specific topic?

USA Today rules for submitting op-eds include: the column should be between 550 and 750 words. They should include links to back up factual material and quotes. Any individual featured in the article must also be identified in their full names. The newspaper also does not publish class projects, open letters or any material that has been submitted to other outlets.

The New York Times also accepts op- eds that are in the range of 400 to 1,200 words. The article must be original and offered exclusively to Times. It should also include annotations for any attributions or assertions made in the essay. The newspaper has published numerous articles on the topic of DACA.
