College of Saint Perl Programming Project Part A
Research Handling Multiple Clients
In this assignment, you study the different ways of handling multiple clients.
Using the Internet, research how multiple clients may be handled.
Based on your research and understanding, complete the following discussions:
Part 1
Answer the following questions:
In the distributed library application, would you prefer to use select for handling multiple clients? Is it possible to achieve the same task without using select? If yes, discuss various ways of doing this.
Compare the usage of select and accept in your multiclient network programs?
Part 2
Write a program to implement a TCP concurrent server with the following functionalities:
When the client starts up, it should display a menu with the following service choices:
Reversal of the string
Count of words given the separator
Count of characters
Check for palindrome
Provide the required functionality as a switch at the time of client invocation and convey it to the server as a part of the protocol by sending a message.
Once your program is done and running, post your response that includes the following:
Outline of the method of invoking your server and client programs
The server and client window screenshots for a sample service selected by the client
The source code of the programs
Part B
Course Project Part 4 Client-Server Authentication
Using the TCP echo server and client discussed in the week’s readings as a starting point, write client and server programs to implement a simple client-server authentication system. You will be able to implement and test both the client and server programs on a single machine by running them on different ports with the same Internet Protocol (IP) address.
Your program must take care of the following:
At the client end, provide a menu such as:
Register
Authenticate yourself
If a user selects Register, get the login ID and password from the user and contact the server with the information required for registration. The server maintains a file with a list of client login IDs and associated passwords. The server updates this file with the registration information provided by the new user.
If a user selects Authenticate yourself, get the login ID and password from the user. Send this information to the server for authentication. The server authenticates the user by performing a password lookup and sending a “Client Authenticated” or “Client Not Authenticated” message. This is required to implement the JOIN feature in your distributed library implementation.
Continue with the Microsoft Word document from W3 Assignment 2 and add your client and server programs to it. Include client and server window screenshots for successful and unsuccessful authentication attempts.
