CMN 102 UC Davis How Advertising on Social Media Using Ads Improve how Audience Make Donations Research Group research
As a group, you will conduct a study on a topic in the field of communication. Conducting a study includes the following steps:
i) choosing a topic that interests you
ii) doing a brief literature review of 3-5 existing studies on the topic
iii) establishing research question
iv) selecting a method (experiment or survey only) to answer your research question
v) collecting data
vi) analyzing data
vii) and writing it all up.
Even though you are conducting the study in groups, the term paper will be an individual assignment. Therefore, you are encouraged to answer different RQ (test different hypotheses) than your teammates’.
Final Paper
You will write a 9-12 page research paper individually. The paper should be in APA format (Times New Roman, 12pt, 1 inch margins, double space). Please refer to the following page if you are unfamiliar with APA format Your paper should include four sections: Theory (Literature Review), Method, Results, and Discussion.
Theory (Literature Review)
In this section, you are expected to introduce your topic and explain the importance of studying the topic. Briefly conceptualize the constructs of your interest and how they are related. Review 3-5 existing scholarly works to base your conceptualization upon. Propose your research question(s) (or hypotheses) based on the conceptualization.
Method
This section requires a detailed explanation of how your study was conducted, and consists of several subsections to most effectively describe your research process.
Participants
Who participated? (demographics)
How many participated?
How were they selected? (volunteers? students?)
Measures
Experiment
Manipulation of Independent variable(s)
Dependent variables
Survey
Independent/Dependent Variables
Scales/measurements used to measure independent and dependent variables
Procedure
How the measures were used to assess the participants
(A play-by-play of what happens in the study)
Results
In this section, you report the statistics (e.g., means, correlations) you used, your results, and answers to your research questions. You should properly report the means or correlations required for the analyses you conducted. Also, APA format should be followed in reporting the statistics. No interpretation of your findings should be reported in this section.
Discussion
This section includes interpretation of your findings and description of the significance of the findings. By connecting your findings to existing theories and previous findings, you should be able to explain what your results mean empirically. No statistics should be reported here. This is a good place to explain how your findings contribute to the theory your research questions are based upon.
Also, thoroughly acknowledge any limitations you may have had regarding the method. What are some limitations of the method you used in answering your research question? What are some alternative methods that you could have used? This is where you discuss the characteristics of different methods covered in the course in relation to your project. Finally, propose future research directions that would build from your study or extend your results.
