Due to significant violations of federal and institutional rules and regulations, ethical issues in human participant research have received increasing attention over the past 50 years. While it might seem obvious that respect, integrity, fidelity, and justice should serve as the ethical foundation for all research activities, this has not always been the case for research involving human participation. While there are certainly ethical considerations for both qualitative and quantitative research, Havercamp (2005) focuses specifically on ethical issues that emerge in qualitative research in the field of applied psychology. After reading Havercamp (2005) and reviewing Standard 8: Research and Publication of the APA Ethics Code, select two substandards, and discuss their importance with respect to research activities. Consider a research area of interest to you and discuss how these standards would apply during the research process. Please support your discussion with additional articles or credible websites.

Qualitative and Quantitative Research

Students may be more familiar with a quantitative approach to research, but many research problems can be explored using either a quantitative approach, a qualitative approach, or both, in a mixed methods approach. Polkinghorne (2005) provides a good introduction to qualitative research and Lee (1992) compares qualitative and quantitative research methods. The required text also compare qualitative and qualitative approaches. Both approaches are useful, but provide methods to obtain answers to different types of questions. For your initial post, consider a research problem of interest to you and formulate one research question consistent with qualitative approaches and one research question consistent with quantitative approaches. Drawing upon your research questions, compare and contrast the qualitative approaches of research from the quantitative approaches.
