This assignment should be a page or two long, maybe a little longer depending on how big
your images are. Select any hard drive at your disposal – a laptop or desktop HDD, a
removable drive, an old hard drive you have lying around somewhere, a USB stick, whatever
you have.
Instructions
Describe the media in as much detail as you can. Tell me the manufacturer, the part number,
the serial number, etc. Is it a spinning disks type of drive or an SSD? What’s the capacity?
What is the sector size? What is the cluster size? What file system does it use?
Show me screenshots if you can, and/or pictures of the outside of the drive.
Treat this as though you were writing it for a formal report. Your role is to collect and
catalog the evidence as though it may be used in a case. Note that in a real case, you would
use write blocking and other techniques we haven’t learned yet, and you would establish a
chain of custody. For this assignment, don’t worry about evidence spoliation or chain of
custody. If you need to access the drive to get information on the disk geometry and file
system, go ahead.
Grading Criteria
Formatting, clarity, grammar, spelling, and attractiveness of presentation are
important. Make it easy to read and use clear screenshots or pictures. Imagine this is
something you might present in a legal proceeding or to your boss in a corporate setting. I’m
looking for a professional document that describes all the characteristics of the drive and
allows me to uniquely identify it.
