Lab 2 – Pendulum
Directions
1. Load https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/pendulum-lab/latest/pendulum-lab_en.html and select
Lab. Keep the pendulum’s friction set to none.
2. Watch the lab interface and linear regression videos. Feel free to use the linear regression template.
Part A – Qualitative relationships
1. Using the simulation, determine if each the following variables affects the pendulum’s period, :
a. Release angle, .
b. Pendulum length, .
c. Pendulum mass, .
d. Gravity, .
2. For each variable which affected the projectile’s trajectory, describe qualitatively how it changes the
pendulum’s period . For instance, as (some variable) increases, increases (or decreases).
Part B – Dimensional analysis
Qualitative relationships are informative, but we often wish to discover or verify a quantitative
relationship. Sometimes it’s helpful to start with dimensional (unit) analysis.
Suppose that for small release angles, the period is approximately = , where , , and are
unknown constants. Noting that the left and right sides of this equation must have the same units,
determine the values of , , and . Show your work.
Lab 2 – Pendulum
Part C – Quantitative relationship
In the previous problem we found that if the period takes the form = , then = √ . Note
however that the equations = 7√ or = 12√ also have consistent units, because the constants 7
and 12 are unitless. So to give our previous result more generality, we could have also included some
unitless constant . That is, = √ .
You have two tasks
1. Collect data to verify the relationship ( ) = √ where = 9.81 m/s2 and is some constant.
Include your data and plots (properly labeled with units) to support your conclusion.
2. Measure the constant (including its uncertainty).
Suggestions
1. Using the same small release angle each time, measure the period for several lengths (at least 5).
2. If we let = and = √ , then = is a linear relationship.
