University of California Irvine Shut Down for Reasons of Public Safety Essay The problem/ solution essay

“Should we continue the shut down for reasons of public safety, or should we open up businesses, beaches and the economy in general to reduce the economic damage from the corona virus?” Many health professionals think it might be too soon. At the same time many people think continuing the shutdown could lead to even more damage than the virus itself. What do you think?

Answering this question in a quick journal is good preparation for the problem/ solution essay that you will be writing in the coming week. You could answer this question in one paragraph; however, if I were doing it I think I would take at least 2 or 3 paragraphs. In any case, in your journal response you should do the following:

-Answer the question directly with your response. Remember there is no need for expressions such as “I think…” because this journal is what you think. Instead, brainstorm, research, take notes, and make your answer clear to yourself before you write the journal.

-Once you say your answer/ main idea, then give the reasons why you think this way.

-Of course not everyone will have the same idea here. There are many people on both sides of this debate. Therefore, after you say your idea and the reasons why you have this view, you show briefly look at the opposite point of view and say why that view might be wrong. To make an argument stronger it can help a lot to see what other people think, and then to say why you do not agree with them. Again, you do not need to use “I” or “you” in this journal. Focus on expressing and supporting your idea.

-Finally, at the end of your journal you should remind readers one more time of your main idea that is why we should, or should not, open up the economy and beaches etc. at this time. When you conclude with your main idea it can make this point of view stronger in readers’ minds. After all, that is your main purpose in this quick journal!
