The ethical risks of Artificial Intelligence
I chose this topic because of it’s increasing popularity and the how this
technology makes lives a lot easier but at the same time can be very dangerous and
ethically unstable. With the explosion of artificial intelligence powered Voice Assistants
including Amazon’s Echo, Google’s Google Assistant, Microsoft’s Cortana and Apple’s
Siri have all contributed to the changing way in which individuals consume content,
complete tasks, search for information, purchase products and interact with firms. But
with devices that can be accessed via voice commands can be also extremely dangerous
because essentially it is a corporate and possibly a government “fly on the wall”, that
could possibly be invading your privacy around the clock.
With the growing use and convenience of artificial intelligence systems that are
commercially available the understanding of what is information and how it can be used
is of vital importance. With systems such as Amazon Echo and Google Home there is an
entire new market emerging of tailored add experience due to the constant listening of
these devices. Given that technology has become a central part of an individual’s
everyday life, particularly in the case of in-home voice assistants, privacy concerns
among individuals continues to grow. The problem that many users and consumers are
not thinking about is what is being done with the information that is overheard and
recorded that is not direct commands. With this technology the possibilities are endless
and with the ease of use one can get too comfortable with such technology that can leave
many vulnerable if used in the right context at the wrong time and vice versa. Examples
include emergency situations like a robbery, assault or something of that nature can the
artificial intelligence recognize an emergency so that a person can be helped? Or if a

person was having a conversation that deals with illegal transactions but is hypothetical
conversations can this be recorded without consent and be used in the court of law even
though no actual crime has been committed? The mere thought of personal conversations
over a phone should be scary enough but to have a device that can possibly record you as
you are in the comfort of your home is unethical, it’s the equivalent to being wire tapped
without a warrant. The ethical concerns need to be considered from both the company’s
perspective, as well as the rights of the user and consumer and any individual that may be
within hearing range of the device.
Understanding the privacy risks and ethical concerns coexistent with artificial
intelligence is a critical step in the overall use of digital assistant software. With the
continually expansive forms of digital recording come the numerous opportunities for the
risk associated with digital assistant software. The rise in the utilization of cellphones,
smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops and other forms of recording has made it fairly
easy to be exposed to places. The significance of possessing the knowledgeable skillset
pertaining to safeguarding one’s digitally inscribed geographical fingerprint, sometimes
unknowingly left behind by the victim, is immense. Being able to utilize this skillset will
ultimately prove beneficial to understanding the implications of the privacy risks and
ethical concerns artificial intelligence capabilities produce. While adopting the
understanding of this information, equally important is the awareness of how the
utilization of solutions and precautions assist with minimizing privacy and safety risks
and concerns.

What is done with any background audio, the audio that is overheard? Could
recordings be held up in court?
So, while you might consider using Alexa as evidence in court as being
potentially no different from searching someone’s home with a warrant, there is certainly
more to consider here. And more worrying is that something like this could be seen to set
a precedent. If police and government officials are allowed access to devices that record
our everyday activities, then can we ever consider a conversation to be truly ‘private’? Is
this not the future that George Orwell warned us against? Ever since Edward Snowden’s
leaks, this has been a hot topic of debate, but with IoT, it takes on a whole extra
dimension.
Can these devices and technology get too smart?
As far as a listening device how does one protect his/her self from being recorded, while
still using the product?
The larger concern is privacy, rather than security. Talking to an Amazon Echo and
Google Home requires trust in Amazon and Google. Beyond that, it in turn requires trust
in third-party developers that create all of those integrated apps. It’s not just companies
that could abuse your data, however. Amazon Echo and Google Home users must also
trust their family members and houseguests. Even if the line of communication is safe
from hackers and government agencies, voice assistants are still riddled with unforeseen
vulnerabilities.
Nothing is inconceivable, however Amazon and Google both have safety efforts that
keep snoops from wiretapping your home. The sound compressing from your home to

Amazon and Google’s server farms is encoded, so regardless of the possibility that your
home system is traded off, it’s impossible that the devices can be utilized as listening
gadgets. A greater hazard is somebody getting hold of your Amazon or Google secret key
and seeing a log of your cooperation’s on the web.
