Integrating Quotes and Paraphrases into your Essay using ICE

your use of a quote or paraphrase from a source. Never insert a quote or a paraphrase
abruptly into your writing without first introducing the quote, citing it, and explaining it.

Annotated Bibliography Prompt
Writing an Annotated Bibliography
(adapted from onlinuris.cornell.edu)
What is an annotated bibliography?
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used
for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called “References” (APA) or “Works
Cited” (MLA) depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just
includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).
An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated
bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. The purpose of
the annotation is to indicate the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
Why should I write an annotated bibliography?
•
•
To learn about your topic: Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for
a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have
to write annotations for each source, you’re forced to read each source more carefully.
You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. At the
professional level, annotated bibliographies allow you to see what has been done in the
literature and where your own research or scholarship can fit.
To help you formulate a thesis: Every good research paper is an argument. The purpose of
research is to state and support a thesis. So, a very important part of research is
developing a thesis that is debatable, interesting, and current. Writing an annotated
bibliography can help you gain a good perspective on what is being said about your topic.
By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you’ll start to see what the
issues are, what people are arguing about, and you’ll then be able to develop your own
point of view.
How do I write an annotated bibliography?
Step 1: Conduct research. Locate various sources that may contain useful information and
ideas about your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual sources. Then choose those
that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
Step 2: Cite sources according to MLA (Links to an external site.) format.
Step 3: Write the annotation (~150-200 words).

Summarize: What are the main arguments? What is the point of this source?
What topics are covered? If someone asked what this source is about, what would
you say?
Assess: After summarizing a source, evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it
compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is
this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?
Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it
fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you
shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has
it changed how you think about your topic?
Example
“Jaw Surgery.” Mayo Clinic. Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2011.
Web. 26 Nov 2011.
This source discusses the experience of someone who undergoes jaw surgery. It talks about
what corrective jaw surgery is, who needs the surgery, how a person’s treatment is
determined, the patient’s experience before, during, and after the surgery, and the benefits of
getting the surgery. This article was extremely beneficial to me because I was able to get a
better understanding of the steps that a patient has to go through during the treatment. It
was a credible source because it was up to date and it was from the Mayo Foundation for
Medical Education and Research. The Mayo Foundation researches different medical
problems, so I knew that this would be a good source to use for my paper. Since I wanted to
discuss the steps that a patient has to go through during the treatment, I knew it would fit
into my paper perfectly. Compared to my other sources, I liked this source the most because
it gave me much more to discuss in my paper.
Annotated Bibliography
Lee, C. M., & Bax, K. A. (2000). Children’s reactions to parental separation and
divorce. Paediatrics & child health, 5(4), 217-218.
The article focuses on the reaction of children when their parents separate or divorce
to understand whether the effects are short or long term. Lee & Bax (2000) explore this issue
in Canadian families and they point out that the process is painful and challenging for both
children and parents because of the sudden change. This reaction is common in most families
but both parties adjust to the situation after some time because the new living arrangements
become normal after a state of equilibrium and mutual understanding are regained by the
parents. This article will be helpful in my research because it contains information regarding
the factors leading to marriage dissolution, the effects of parents’ separation and divorce on
children, and how the parents develop coping skills.
Ruggles, S. (1997). The rise of divorce and separation in the United States, 1880–
1990. Demography, 34(4), 455-466.
The article reveals that during the 1880-1990 decade, the prevalence of parental
separation and divorce was linked to the increased participation of women in the labor
market. Ruggles (1997) explains that the rise of female participation in the workforce when
their marriage partners experienced low economic opportunities or were unemployed
enhanced the likelihood of separation or divorce. According to the author, marital stability
was dependent on the conditions of the local labor market. The article is essential for the
research because it identifies the trend of parental divorce or separation rates in the United
States from a historical perspective such that one can learn whether there is an improvement
or not and the factors involved.
Karimi, R., Bakhtiyari, M., & Arani, A. M. (2019). Protective factors of marital stability in
long-term marriage globally: a systematic review. Epidemiology and health, 41.
In the article, the authors explore the components of partner and family relationships
that enhance marital stability. Karimi, Bakhitiyari, and Arani (2019) employed a systematic
review approach in their study across various relevant databases to determine long-term
marriage protective factors. They found the latter to be cover both intrapersonal and
interpersonal aspects. The findings, therefore, show that marital satisfaction and identity are
constructed by intimacy while married couples overcome critical situations because of
commitment. The article is essential for the research because it contains details about the
various pillars of marriage and the elements that married couples should focus on to increase
relationship and family togetherness.
Fox, J., & Warber, K. M. (2013). Romantic relationship development in the age of Facebook:
An exploratory study of emerging adults’ perceptions, motives, and
behaviors. Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, 16(1), 3-7.
The article explores how social media affects romantic relationships in the digital age.
Fox & Warber (2013) dissect the concept of romantic love in the modern era by defining the
term firstly and determining the factors that enhance healthy or quality relationships,
particularly romantic ones. According to the authors, happiness, good health, and
psychological wellness are primary factors. Romantic relationships undergo different stages
of life as seen in young and older adults. Nevertheless, it is important to understand the
dynamics in the motives, perceptions, and behaviors of adults regarding social media and
romantic relationships without oversimplifying the interdependence of factors. The article is,
therefore, useful in providing an in-depth analysis of this topic, and including it in the
research will contribute to great knowledge enhancement on the same.
