Troy University Gender Stereotypes Discussion Everyone has been subjected to gender stereotypes, often subtle and unintended. What assumptions have people made about you based on your gender?My example: Several years ago, I wore my hair very short. One afternoon, when I was at a hardware store buying supplies for a research project, an employee came up behind me and said “sir, what can I help you with today?” This was a simple misunderstanding, based on common associations of gender (short hair and shopping solo at a hardware store are often both considered more masculine). No harm was meant or received, but it demonstrates how we respond to others based on stereotypes of gender when we don’t have other information.
