Designed to measure individual’s performance against predetermined standards,
performance appraisal can influence employees’ behaviors, correct any deviations, and
eventually meet the organizational goals. This system has become a common practice
adopted in the organization control process (Brinkerhoff & Kanter, 1980).
Performance appraisal is used as a yardstick for promotions and terminations despite
being controversial. When done right, it certainly will motivate employees to be more
productive. Regardless, the performance review is one of the most dreaded events of
the year, both to the managers who conduct the review and to the employees who
receive it.
Because of its bureaucracy, by the end of 2015, at least 30 of the Fortune 500
companies discontinued performance evaluation. Some companies from New York to
Silicon Valley and across the world are abandoning the traditional appraisal protocol by
replacing it with frequent check-ins between supervisors and subordinates (Cappelli &
Tavis, 2016). However, Goler and colleagues (2016) studied Facebook and surveyed
more than 300 people. The results were quite surprising: 87% of the respondents would
like to keep performance ratings.
