I need help with a Political Science question. All explanations and answers will be used to help me learn.

1)Both the Democratic and Republican Parties have recently held their nominating conventions to put forward their respective candidates for President/Vice-President. Both conventions were primarily virtual, because of the current pandemic. Are the conventions still useful? Why or why not? And if not, what do you think should replace them?
