2. Projects may be handed to me during my office hour, or

3. Projects may be uploaded in Canvas by the due date and time as a SINGLE file (not folder) attachment. If I cannot open your attachment, your grade is 0. There should be exactly ONE attachment, from one upload.

Be sure to include your graphs with this project in a single document when you turn it in.

Reviewing the examples in Section 9.5: Additional Information and Full Hypothesis Test Examples (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. may be helpful for completing this project. Chapter 9: Hypothesis Testing of Single Mean and Single Proportion Project
NOTE: Technology Based Projects make use of the TI graphing calculator and may be done individually, or in
groups of up to four members. Turn in one copy with all of the group members’ names on the top. If I cannot
open your attachment, your grade is 0. If you send me more than one file, I will print and grade ONLY ONE of
them (my choice).
Late papers will receive a grade of 0. Projects due the same day as an exam may be handed in at the beginning
of the exam, and all pages must be STAPLED. All other labs must be uploaded in Canvas by the due date and
time as a SINGLE file (not a folder with multiple files).
Be sure to include your graphs with this lab in a single document when you turn it in.
Student Learning Outcomes:
•
•
The student will select the appropriate distributions to use in each case.
The student will conduct hypothesis tests and interpret the results.
Fill out the answer sheet for each of the hypothesis tests below, using a 5% level of significance. Use 4 decimal
places, unless the p-value is really small (less than 0.0001), in which case use at least 2 significant figures
This means 2 non-zero numbers somewhere after the decimal point). Axis of graphs should be drawn with a
ruler or done on a computer.
Each part c should indicate which of X or P’ you are using (circle one)
Each part c should clearly state what your population is, and contain the word “proportion” or “average”
Each part d should give the degrees of freedom (if student-t distribution) or BOTH the mean and standard
deviation (if normal distribution).
1. Language Survey
About 42.3% of Californians speak a language other than English at home. Using your class as the sample,
conduct a hypothesis test to determine if the percent of students at De Anza College that speak a language
other than English at home is different from 42.3%.
DATA TO USE: 21 out of 34 students in the sample speak a language other than English at home
2. Jeans Survey
Suppose that students own an average of 4 pairs of jeans. 8 people from your class were surveyed to
determine if the average for students at De Anza College is higher than 4.
DATA TO USE: 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 7, 12
1. Language Survey a. Ho: _______________
b. Ha: ___________________
c. In words, CLEARLY state what your random variable X or P’ represents.
d. State the distribution to use for the test. If t, include the degrees of freedom. If normal, include the mean and
standard deviation.
e. p-value = ______________
In 1 – 2 complete sentences, explain what the p-value means for this problem.
f. Use the previous information to sketch a picture of this situation. CLEARLY label and scale the horizontal
axis and shade the region(s) corresponding to the p-value. The values of your sample statistic and the
hypothesized value of the population parameter should be on the axis.
g. Indicate the correct decision (“reject the null hypothesis” or “do not reject the null hypothesis”), the reason
for it, and write an appropriate conclusion, using COMPLETE SENTENCES.
Decision:
Conclusion:
h. Construct a 95% Confidence Interval for the true mean or proportion. Include a sketch of the graph of the
situation. Label the point estimate and the lower and upper bounds of the Confidence Interval.
Confidence Interval: ( ___________________ , ____________________ )
i. Interpret the confidence interval in a complete sentence.
