Technological Advances in the 21st Century Annotated Bibliography Hello,Please, refer to the attachment for the new assignment in Psychology. Please, read the instructions in first file and follow them. The other one, is an example for you.Note: 12 pages Single Space (APA style). Each student will construct an annotated bibliography using articles that focus on the mental
health needs/issues of a specific population chosen by the student as it relates to the various
topics covered in this course. Each student is encouraged to narrow their area of interest in these
articles (i.e., a particular population, an area of counseling services, a theoretical approach, etc.)
as long as the primary focus is bio-psychology/neuro-psychology and its implications to the
mental health needs of a particular population. This bibliography will contain at least 30
(thirty) articles/annotations and will briefly summarize the articles that you have found on the
subject. Each article annotation should be a concise but comprehensive summary of the article.
The bibliography will be organized into sections as follows:
–
Title page ( recommended topic > mental statues for the mass shooters)
Brief introduction to the topic/population (Relevance)
Annotations (with article citation in APA 6th format) (Population, intervention, results,
conclusions, significance, implications, etc.; and/or Who, What, When, Where, Why).
Concluding remarks/summary.
A copy (docx or pdf) of the first page of each article used in the Annotated Bibliography.
The title page, introduction, article title and information in the annotations, and summary
will follow APA Publication Manual 6th Edition format and style.
30 articles are enough for this assignment
12 pages singles space, if lease than 12 no problem just make sure you have 30 articles.

Introduction
In the 21st century, technology has seen immense changes. Some of these changes have
seen the evolution of social media sites over the years. The use of social media technology has
relatively increased among the youth and young adult across the world. Social media has
positively influenced the way people communicate and relate. More so, the connection around
the world has been enhanced. People can have different friends around the world at the same
time. However, the increase of social media use has been observed to coincide with the increase
in the number of a teenager with psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression,
dissociative disorder, and suicidal ideation. Numerous researches have associated this negative
impact on mental health and psychological development in the use of social media. This
annotated bibliography will seek to examine and review 30 sources, which will be some of them
used in the research study on the impact of social media on teenagers.

Current Addiction Reports, 2(2), 175-184.
https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs40429-015-0056-9.pdf
In this article, Andreassen does a review of the research done on the addition of online
social network sites. The author states that SNS addition has much in common with other
addictions such as withdrawal, tolerance, salience, mood modification, relapse as well as
salience. From all the resources she reviewed, it was found out that several screening tools have
been developed to identify SNS addict. According to the article, the method of identifying
addicts is various base ways, which have been obscured. Based on the empirical and theoretical
paradigm SNS addiction is encouraged by sociocultural, dispositional as well as behavioral
reinforcement. The review generally found out that SNS addiction could lead to impaired health
of an individual and well-being. Andreassen implicated that despite little or no empirical
experimentation to treat or even mitigate the SNS addiction helpful strategies, as well as
therapies, have been proposed in the reviewed articles. This information would be useful in our
research to help determine whether socials media addiction is harmful to a teenagers mental
health and wellbeing.

adolescent sample. PLoS One, 12(1),
e0169839.https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0169839
The researchers aimed at filling the gap, which exist in the field based on the problematic
use of social media. It has been urged that social media is one of the most activities used for
leisure among adolescents and this has grown to be a problematic issue. Therefore, the research
study focused on a survey of 5961 adolescents participant who took part in the European
School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD). Thus, the researcher employed
the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS). It was found out that the only 4.5 percent
of the participant was in the at-risk category. This is a relatively high percentage considering the
number of participants. The symptom of those at risk was even more alarming since teenagers
experienced low self-esteem, higher social media use and a higher level of depression symptom.
Appropriate methods should be used to target this category of adolescents and enrolled in
prevention and intervention programs. The BSMAS can be used by a different study to show the
relationship between social media and mental health as it has been implicated by the authors to
be effective and sufficient.

social media use and mental health from adolescent and parent perspectives. Journal of
Adolescence, 61, 1-11. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/319559179/download
[accessed Sep 11 2018].
In this article, the researchers based their analysis on teenagers all over the United States.
The sample size was adequate to yield an acceptable result. The research was based on their
hypothesis that excessive use of social media is related to the psychosocial adjustment.
However, Barry et al. focused on both the perspective of the parents and the teenagers. The
researchers found out that excessive use of social media was directly related to mental health
symptom such as loneliness, inattention, anxiety, hyperactivity, ODD, fear of missing out as
well as depressive symptoms. Despite the fact that this symptom was based on both the parent
and teenagers report on using social media. It was found out that that teenager whose parent has
reported having higher Fear of missing out had serious anxiety as well as depressive symptoms.
This study implies that there is a strong connection between social media use and mental health.
Thus, it would be useful for the research on the effects of social media on teenagers.

The researchers based their systematic reviews on the debates in relation to the impact of
social technologies on the mental health of teenagers. Therefore, Best et al. did this research to
identify the effects of social media technologies among the youth. After doing a systematic
review, the benefits of social media were enhanced self-esteem, increased social capital,
perceived social support, as well as enhanced chances for self-disclosure. On the other hand, the
harm was increased exposure to the social violation, harm, cyberbullying, and depression. I
found this source educative and good for the research study on the effect of social media on
teenagers since it reveals contradictory evidence. Furthermore, the researcher found out that all
there lacked empirical causal research on the effect of social media on the mental health of
adolescents. The need for research based on this recommendations and implication justify why
the resource would be useful for the research study.

The researchers based their systematic review on the research question Are children and
adolescent mental health problems increasing in the 21st century? the study was because
everyone in five children has mental health issues. The researcher hypothesized that there had
been a change of social as well as cultural factors, which have affected the rates of internalizing
and externalizing issues. The study found out that the issue of internalizing problems increased
in the adolescents. Thus an indication that the recent cohort of teenagers has internalizing
problems as compared to the previous cohorts. The researchers implicated that various
approaches to the early intervention as well as prevention has to be explored. The systematic
review would be useful for our research since we will aim to see whether social media is the
cause of this increase in internalizing problems in teenagers in the 21st century.

depressive symptoms, rumination, and rumination. Psychology of popular media culture,
1(2), 72. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3907111/
The researchers stipulated that the advances in technologies have increased chances for
the use of social network through the internet. The researchers surveyed the teenager in two
studies to prove the hypothesis that there is an association of social media use and depressive
symptoms, corummination as well as rumination amongst the youth. Furthermore, the researcher
went further to test whether the frequency of use or the quality of social media networking was
associated with the depressive symptoms amongst teenagers. It was found out that the frequency
of social networking had nothing to do with depressive symptoms but the quality of social
networks had a direct relationship. Davila et al. discovered that depressive rumination regulated
association, however, both rumination, as well as co-rumination, were linked with the usage and
quality of social networking. From this finding were can effectively base our research on this
study so that we can further evaluate if there are other factors that affect this relationship
between the use of social media and the mental health of teenagers.

Fox and Moreland based their research on the negative effects of social media on
teenagers. The two researchers did exploration research in which they found out that Facebook
and other social network sites have negative psychological effects on individuals. For Facebook,
the stressors themes were identified as management of annoying content, lack of control and
privacy, tethered, jealousy and social comparison as well as tension and conflict. It was found
out that despite the negative energy teenagers still use social networking sites due to the fear of
missing out. These findings of this research have been consistent with the ones one is already
seen above. The researchers found out the responses from the participant were contradictory. The
teenagers believed that Facebook is inconsequential yet at the end show signs of anxiety,
negative emotions, and depressive symptoms. It clear from the study that the use of some
research methods may not uncover the scope of users experience. The focus on Facebook, as
well as the finding, would be useful for the development of the research study.

Most of the articles covered in this section examine the negative effects if social media,
however, Frison and Eggermont researched the positive effects of social media on the mental
health of teenagers. The researched examined a hypothesis that Facebook acts as a medium for
social support to daily-depressed adolescent. The structural equation modeling was used to
predict the total number of teenagers seeking social support on Facebook. It is noted that the
socially supported sort on Facebook helped in decreasing the depressed moods of teenagers. This
is one of the advantages of social media. It has to be noted that the research also found that when
support is sought but not perceived it increased the depressed moods of the adolescent. The
findings of this research are different from other since they highlight some mental benefit of
social media use even though it still holds the fact that to some extent Facebook affects the
mental well-being of adolescents.

In this article, the researchers focused on using structural equation modeling to find the
relationship between the teenagers depressed mood and various types of Facebook use and
loneliness. To do this, the researchers did not use an integrated longitudinal paradigm nor did
they use differential approach since they did not aim to distinguish the distinctive types of social
media networks but focused on only the relationship between Facebook and depression on
teenagers. Thus, they used a two-wave panel study, which generates an integrated as well as
differential modal. This ensured that the results obtained had a deeper understanding of the
variables. The effects obtained were based on the concept of poor get the richer effect on all the
active users while of the passive user the effect was by poor get the poorer effect. This implies
that Facebook has considerable effects on the mental health of teenagers. Because the study took
a different aspect, it would be effective in helping us do wider research on the effect of social
media on these young minds.

The researchers of this study focused their research on the purpose of social media use
and its effect on the mental health of teenagers. The prevalence of social media use amongst
adolescent has attracted its use in health care. However, the effectiveness of using social media
to support the health of young people has not been researched on. The researchers evaluated the
use of social media tools in which there was a positive result on this tool but lacked empirical
evidence. It is evidence that social media is being used for the various condition in child health
but it does state that it is effective or not. However, the research acts as a baseline on which
other researchers can use to focus on various social media tool and their effectiveness. Through
this study, I will be able to generate research basing on the effects of social media on teenagers
by using the social media tools identified.

Jelenchick and other researchers aimed to prove the hypothesis that the use of social
media site is connected to depression in older adolescents. This was based on the fact that the
most popular activities on the internet are a visit to the social networking sites (SNSs). Therefore
to prove that the use of Facebook could lead to depression. The researchers used an experience
sample method (ESM) paradigm to evaluate the relationship between the two variables. After
surveying university students the analysis done after a week of ESM data collection, it was found
that there was no linkage between the use of Social networking sites and clinical depression.
The finding of this study was contradictory to all those found in other studies in this
bibliography. Thus, it asks a question of whether the use of social media true impact teenager
mental health. Other research has stated that there might be a connection between depression in
teenagers and social media use. Even though the study had contradictory results, it is useful since
it highlights the need for having other research on the same.

Depression and anxiety, 33(4), 323331.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/da.22466
The article shows research done on the association between mental health and social
media use. The researchers used a relatively large sample that can yield an acceptable result.
The assessment on the use of social media was based on self-reporting while depression
evaluated using Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS).
From this analysis, the research could be able to tell the frequency of use of social media and the
level of depression of the participant. This is not a systematic review meaning that the
researchers did empirical research and the results obtained should be used as reference data.
From the analysis, it was found that there was a strong connection between the use of social
media and depression since the teenager whom a reported higher frequency on use of social
networking sites had an increased chance of depression thus affirming that the use of social
media increases the chances of depression in teenagers.
