Discussion Two

I live in Kentucky

Description:

Read and review the official federal website on the electoral college. https://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college.

There are links to various resources on the home page. You may want to start with “What is the electoral college?” Why do we even have an electoral college? What is the historical basis for the electoral college? There are links with maps of past elections, as well as links to FAQs and state by state descriptions. There is lots of information on this website for all things electoral college. Explore this website in depth.

For this discussion board, after you have reviewed this website, please state the following:

Identify your state and the number of electoral votes. If you do not have a state, then pick a state you have a particular affinity for and give the reason for the affinity as well.

How did your state vote in the most recent Presidential election and how did your state handle the electoral votes? Be sure and reference your research from the electoral college website and include some of that information.

Tell us something about the politics and government in your state. Be specific. Give examples. Include specific people and specific issues.

Discussion Three

Research a special interest group that is pertinent to your passion/place in society or in which you have a strong interest.

Post the group name, website and tell us about the group including answers to at least the following questions:

1. Why did you pick this particular group?

2. When was the group formed? How many are in the group?

3. What are their finances? What is the annual budget? How do they raise money? What is the source(s) of their funding?

4. Do they have a lobbyist? If so, who is it and how much are they paid? Have they been successful in obtaining legislation for the group? If so, what is the legislation and the cost? Who does the legislation benefit?

5. Did this group receive any money from the government this year? If so, how much? Who was responsible for them obtaining money?

In the past few election cycles, our state’s role
in the party nomination for president virtu-
ally has disappeared with a May primary date.
Several states have leap-frogged ahead of us,
and party leaders have indicated that they do
not want any more states to move up their
primary date. The national party needs to find
a way to ensure that all states, large and small,

Party leaders in several states are urging
their clected officials to support a one-day
national primary for presidential candidates
As more states move toward early primary
dates in February, states with later nominat
ing processes argue that their clections are
little more than symbolic. They argue that
to give all states an equal say in nominating
presidential candidates, a single election is
both fair and cost efficient. Critics question
however, whether one nationwide primary
would favor the best-knows candidate with

ARGUMENTS FOR:
1. A single national primary permits equal
participation by all states and presents a
fair compromise with the increased num-
ber of delegates that larger states send to
the national conventions, much like the
compromises during the original constitu-
tional debates
2. The nominating process needs to be less costly.
particularly when presidential candidates realisti-
cally need to raise $100 million a year before
the general election to be competitive for the
nomination. Holding all primaries and caucuses
on a single day will reduce overall election
expenses significantly
3. If the American electorate knows presidential
nominations will be decided by each party on
one day, then they will be more likely to vote-a
significant factor for elections in which, histori-
cally, fewer than 20 percent of eligible voters
typically participate

Support National Primary
ARGUMENTS AGAINST:
1. Each state decides in conjunction with the
national party when its primary or caucus will
take place, and the federal system of government
designed by the Framers did not guarantee that
all states would be treated equally at all times
2. A national primary would favor candidates with
high name recognition and funding to further
that recognition and would severely disadvan-
tage lesser-known candidates within the party,
3. Even though the general election takes place on
one day, voter turnout in the United States still
is lower than in other advanced industrialized
democracies, which suggests that other factors
influence who participates.
