Strategic Management DQ 3 Response DQ Response

Over the past two weeks, our readings and discussions have been focused on establishing a baseline for understanding diversity. In this module, we’ll begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the issue and is not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So, looking through the historical lens isn’t just about History Channel documentaries—it’s also about how you use the lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions:
· In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of diversity?
· Consider a current event in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? Please share a news link to your events.
· How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and diversity have an influence on your discipline of study or chosen profession?
Respond to at least two of your classmates. Compare and contrast your answers to further everyone’s understanding of diversity and the lens of history.

Angelia Elser – History allows us to understand what the past was like, what the social norms were during that time period. History also allows us to learn from the past to see the progress made to today’s society. If one does not know history, then you’re bound to repeat it.
In today’s world where there is so much dividing, and hatred, burning of American flags, it is on 9/11 each year that makes us stop and think about the horrific attack on the United States, all the lives lost, and the Nation that came together. This day touched every single American no matter what age, race, religion. It took an event like this to have people stop and realize that we as Americans need to stand together. People came together, hugging each other in the streets, standing in line to donate blood, buying a record number of American flags. In 2001 our battle cry was “Together we Stand” and that still holds truth to this day. A documentary on Netflix called Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror pulls at my heartstrings.
Culture, diversity, and history have an influence on nursing as it facilitates understanding when caring for an individual. For example, when caring for a veteran, we wouldn’t want to startle him as it may trigger possible PTSD. Caring for someone from China, looking directly into their eyes means your challenging them, and is a sign of disrespect. Diversity, understanding when your patient was born a male but prefers to be called a female name and use, she/her/her pronouns.

In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of diversity?

In looking through the history lens, it helps me personally understand not only where our nation’s diversity comes from, but also emphasizes why it is important. America’s history teaches us that the beginning of our establishment, diversity played a vital role in not only establishing the United States, but also the expansion of the land throughout time. Through establishment and expanding, we inevitably accrue people of a diverse background, ethnicity, beliefs, and cultures. This really affirms that we are all truly immigrants and instills the fundamentals of diversity that we were founded on. 

Consider a current event in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? Please share a news link to your events.

The current event that I chose is the Black Lives Matter movement which showed tremendous growth after the death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin in Florida back in 2012. Black Lives Matter is supposed to be used to highlight the racism, discriminations, and inequality experienced by black people. The number of high profile cases involving police brutality of unarmed minorities since then continues to rise in numbers all resembling each other. This movement has not gone without opposition and is not one that majority support. Some of the backlash that the movement has face include dismissal by people saying things like “all lives matter”, “police lives matter”, or “white lives matter”. One thing that is argued is that Black Lives Matter is not implying black lives being of anymore importance as any other, but that the inequality that is faced is heavily favored against blacks. This problem is NOT a new one, but is becoming a bigger problem because of the technology we have available in today’s time opposed to 20 years ago. 

How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and diversity have an influence on your discipline of study or chosen profession?

My future profession is a social case worker for the Department of Children and Families. The importance of the relationship between history, culture, and diversity all play significant roles to anyone in this field. Helping kids from all backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and cultures is an ability that one must have to succeed and give each kid the best chance for healthy lives. Understanding the history of these kids and their family is key to understanding what it is that may be able to help them.
