The focus of this project is to facilitate your research and analysis skills,
surrounding international business issues. For this research-based project, your
will first choose two (non-native) countries somewhat distant from each other
(possibly one from Europe and another from a different part of the world). You
will also choose one business, for which you will provide an overall strategy for
market entry into each of the countries chosen. You will then research and
identify academic and professional sources of materials two countries (cultural,
political, legal, social environment etc). After a systematic analysis, you will
present an overall strategy for the chosen business in each of these two
countries.
Underneath you will find what country, business and strategy I chose to use for
the international business project. The article underneath is already sent in as a
proposal to the professor for this final project. Pleas email me if you have any

Proposal for International Business Project
The business I chose for the international business project is Starbucks. Starbucks is an American
coffee shop chain founded in 1971. The company sells coffee beans, coffee machines and equipment,
bottled drinks and cakes / desserts, as well as involved in music sales and film production. Starbucks
covers more than 10,000 cafes in more than 35 countries, of which more than half are self-owned and
the other operated through license agreements. Turnover is approx. US $ 22 billion with about 238,000
employees (2017), listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
To identify the right environment, country and other risks I am going to do a web based research to
look up online and gather information about the two different countries. I will do a deeply study to
make sure that I gather all the needed information. I chose the countries Croatia and Venezuela for this
project. Croatia is a republic in southern Europe. The capital is Zagreb. The areas around the capital
Zagreb have the closest settlement. The country has a low fertility rate and an aging population. 59.4
percent of the population live in urban areas (2017). Croatia is a democratic and parliamentary republic.
Agriculture, forestry and tourism are the most important industries. It is grown among other things
potatoes, corn, wheat and fruit. Venezuela is located at the Republic of North South America, by the
Caribbean Sea. Venezuela covers a surface of 912,050 km2 and is the seventh largest country on the
American continent. Venezuela has just over 31 600 000 inhabitants (2018). About 89 percent of the
population lives in urban areas. The three largest cities are the capital of Caracas and the cities of
Maracaibo and Valencia. About 98 per cent of the country’s export revenues come from oil today. The
country also produces products for export such as cement, steel, aluminum, paper and textile products.
Since both Croatia and Venezuela are two countries Starbucks does not have any business in, I would
use the differentiation strategy. Since there would probably be a lot of coffee shops competitors in
Croatia and Venezuela, Starbucks needs to differ their products and services to be more attractive than
other competitors. For Starbucks to succeed this strategy they would need a good research,
development and innovation in both countries. Also, they would need to have the ability to deliver highquality products and services and have an effective sales and marketing program. Since Starbucks in a
large organization they would have to stay agile with their new product development process. If not,
they might have some companies trying to copy their product and sell it for less.
