In general birds have a policy of fly low and slow regarding their fly. It should be noted that the size of bird and the way it flies have a relationship. Say for example humming birds can fly with maximum speed of 200mph and that a duck can fly with a speed of 30mph.
There is always a difference in mind of ornithologist regarding the difference of speed at which a bird in general can fly and the speed at which a bird use to fly normally. This is because of simple logic that it should fly with minimal expenditure of energy with respect to time so as to minimize the rate of metabolism in body. Any bird, say for example Vulture can glide in sky with speed of 15mph in search of prey for around 6 hours. Similarly a bird can choose to fly at maximum speed in case it is being chased or is chasing a prey (Finn, 2012).
In other terms birds use to choose and decide between speed or flight and range to be covered in flight. It was observed from studies that, birds have a tendency to vary their maximum airspeed as when required.
