There are several mediums through which someone can pass a given message to others.
However, some mediums can be more effective in conveying a particular message than others
because of several reasons. In this essay, the message to pass across is that social media is
causing us more harm than good. The two different genres that can be used to convey this
argument include a film and a scholarly article. However, the academic article appears more
effective in conveying this argument more than a movie.
One outstanding quality of a scholarly article that makes it more effective in passing this
message is the fact that it encourages explicit argument, unlike the film that will bring forth an
implicit argument. In implicit argument, the author presents his ideas through direct reasoning
and evidence. In an implicit case, however, the views are offered through an indirect hint, and
the audience has to interpret them to understand the real information (Lovitts 98). While writing
an academic article to convey the message that social media is causing us more harm than good,
it will only be necessary to give the audience several, but, direct reasons to back up this
argument. If using film, however, the message will have to be conveyed through characters in the
movie. The audience, therefore, will have to analyze the behavior of the characters in the film for
them to understand how social media is causing us more harm than good. The advantage of
explicit argument in the scholarly article over the implicit argument in the film is that the article
will be easier for the audience to understand, unlike the film that will require some insight.

On the contrary, the film will easily seem intended for entertainment purposes, and some people

Another reason as to why scholarly article proves more effective in conveying this

appeals that will be difficult to realize in the movie. In this type of persuasion, the author tries to

appropriate to the audience and which suits the topic. In this case, for example, considering that
the article is scholarly, it will be more effective to use formal and straightforward language. The
article will hence be easier to read and understand by a broad spectrum of audiences. By also
using official language, the article will also attract a high level of seriousness from the audience.
This is contrary to the film that is mostly perceived to be meant for entertainments. A Parts from

introducing personal expertise. For instance, you can comfortably inform the audience if you are
an expert in technology and give your professional opinions to support the argument.
While it is possible to employ pathos appeal in the film, it can equally be used in the
article. Pathos appeal attempts to convince the audience to awaken various emotions in them.
For instance, you can make the audience feel anxious, joyful, remorseful or even sympathetic
(Lutzke, and Henggeler). It is possible to use this type of appeal in the article through various
means. For instance, using specific words that bring a particular feeling to the audience, using
emotional tone throughout the article, and including stories of emotional events. Finally, an

harm than good because it allows for more effective use of logos appeal than a film. Logos
appeal tries to convince the audience through reason, and facts (Lutzke, and Henggeler). The
