Social Media & How it Affects Literacy

Literacy is explained and defined in various methods and angles.  All the same, many people have a reservation that social media doesnt have any benefit mainly to the learners’ literacy skills.  Even before the rise of the technology, different abilities and skills were strongly changed either through the internal or external factors. The utilization of the internet in social networking sites and social media, for example, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and several others, has secured grounds on the daily literacy skills and lives of young individuals. The associated effects of social media are clear evidence in most of the literacy skills.  The writing mistakes, for example, wrong grammar, are so rampant among the writings of most of the leaners because whatever they view on the social media platforms and the digital communities are everything but standard English, which tends to be irrelevant.

Reading over the internet has attested to be mentally challenging since it has been proved that the online texts have got specific features and hyperlinks that calls for efficient processing of the skills of comprehension on the side of the reader (Lau, 2017). This is a clear indication that the materials and contents digested from social media, prevents the users from effective evaluation of the skills. Lau continues to reveal that one-time messaging and some digital platform features are more likely to pose threats to the fluency and reading skills, mainly among the young generation. This is a clear indication that social media and the sites for social networking generally could pose adverse effects to the learners’ fluency in reading.

It has been proved that one of the significant effects associated with social media on literacy development is the wrong spelling. Lau proves that incorrect wording and wrong spelling are very common on the medial social platform (Lau, 2017).  In this case, most of the people, especially learners with acess to social media, have revealed that they commit a lot of spelling mistakes. Additionally, it immensely affects the mode of wording, reason being, the kind of text, and construction of sentences adopted in the social platforms lack a taste of quality. These errors usually take place since the participants, at times, lack a much clearer knowledge regarding the spelling of the worlds.  This, therefore, compels them to pick any word close to the spelling of the word they are looking for from social media.  In reference to Buckingham, however, how much the digital link and the sites of social networking pose negative effects on learners reading habits and reading skills. It has also been proved that lack of effective evaluation of skills and fluency is one of the possible effects that can be associated with sites for social networking and social media if there is really a positive concern on the reading skills (Buckingham, 2013).

The eventual effect of social media on literacy is concentration and productivity.  According to Buckingham, the productivity of a learner in a class could be highly affected by social media and the illusion of procrastination (Buckingham, 2013). This, therefore, makes it difficult for the learners to complete their homework within the stipulated period and cannot at all concentrate in class.  It should be understood that doing nothing is never a good thing, and at the same time, spending much of one’s time just looking at the phone’s screen is no different. Too much of anything is a bad thing. Therefore, such factors can be suppressed once they are noticed and effectively managed, or a learner’s literacy is going to be negatively affected.

On the entire academic level, social media could be associated with negative effects, especially on the learner’s productivity. The reason is that they will not be able to have a maximum concentration in class and lacks both conscientiousness and timekeeping. There is no doubt that social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have damaging effects, especially on school productivity. It should also be noted that data and privacy protection are some other attributes that a leaner needs to gain some literacy. Additionally, on the literacy part, leaners can successfully gain more in-depth knowledge through information and data gathering (Cross, 2016). Therefore,  whenever learners are provided with an assignment while at schools, they can maneuver through different online platforms to look for more information and, at the same time, come up with the appropriate solutions for their assignment. Therefore, in the process of doing more extensive research, they get to learn more about other things. In this case, social media is a perfect conduit for literacy.

When it comes to speech and speaking, it is one of the highly essential parts of literacy, which determines the learning capacity of other disciplines. According to the research conducted by Cross, the availability of the sites for social networking and social media could be greatly affected through oral interactions, and some other forms of verbal speech (Cross, 2016).  He continues to prove that these particular social media platforms do not, by any means, promote eloquence and fluency of the speech.   It is, therefore, confirmed that the social media platforms, for example, WhatsApp, Facebook, and several others have just given rise to regular speech jargon and less speech because speech is highly pivotal in any form of learning.

Positively, incorporating social media platforms in the class set-up has highly been supported by different researchers. In reference to Hanson, social media and technology for literacy as a means of instruction has been considerably adopted by the urban learners.  It is perfect proof that most of the learners in the United States have extensive literacy skills, mainly those who have proved to be the true believers of technology and play the most active role in the mainstream culture under the support of the influence of the technology. According to Hanson, the rate at which learners embrace and make use of the technology and social media sites is much swifter when compared to the adults (Hanson, 2016). This is a clear indication that more learners are much more willing to adopt technology when it comes to the literacy of the classroom, as they have some basic skills on how to do it. This makes it easier and efficient to pass literacy among them.  Additionally, social media has been confirmed to be of great importance as it tends to increase literacy skills, especially among the adolescent learners of the English Language.  It does not require any structural application in the classroom.

It has been confirmed that most of the teachers have now embarked on the social media literacy approach as a result of its Common’ Core State Standards.  One of the aspects most of the instructors have been compelled to focus on is literacy, which involves more than just writing, reading, speaking, and listening.  Therefore, in reference to Cross, with the inclusion of the digital media, through the internet, literacy may include, digital, computer, and literacy of the media as well (Cross, 2016). The more significant change in the literacy perception through the development of social media sites and technology, in general, has proved to be effective in the interpretation structure of the texts.

Most of the current research mainly focuses on both negatives and positives associated with the utilization of social media and its associated effects on literacy. Among the aspects considered by most of the researchers is the need for increased learners’ literacy skills. This cold include the current and multimodal practices of literacy. According to Hanson, the educators must come up with effective strategies to relay the literacy instructions through considerations of their area of content as a result of the common core (Hanson, 2016).  On the development if the skills, there exist several news outlets that provide articles online.  In my view, this will avail, greater relevance regarding the content being read and worked on, and it will be a perfect way of passing literacy skills to the learners of the 21st century.

To conclude, the significance of this research mainly involves the influence of social media on the literacy levels of the learners and the associated literacy skills.  The study stresses both the negative and positive effects of social media, which in this case, should be addressed with much agility as they are beneficial to the learners in varied capacities. Therfore, the instructors need to turn on what seemingly appears to pose a negative impression to the learners as it will improve their highly fundamental literacy skills.
