SNHU Capstone Empathize and Define Business Solution Design Journal I’ve attached the question as well as all the resources in the word document below. This is the first of four different projects that are all related. I’d like you to work on the other projects as well when the time comes for each one. They involve more journal entries, making a small website and making a slide show. Please only use the resources provided and be sure to follow proper APA citation format. Empathize and Define
Overview
This Capstone Goal will be your crowning achievement as a CfA student. These Projects provide an
opportunity for you to draw on the competencies you have already demonstrated, as well as your own
personal interests and experience in management. You work for Creative Solutions, a design thinking
company, where your job is to create novel solutions to address complex management-related
problems. Your boss, Ms. Kenda Karani, has asked you to select an existing problem, in your workplace
or community, and use design thinking to propose a solution. You will be doing this not only to solve a
real management issue, but also to demonstrate to others how the design thinking process works. In
addition to studying the problem and developing a prototype solution, you will document your work in a
design journal, design and build a website explaining your final prototype, and create a narrated slide
presentation to introduce others to the design thinking process and share your innovative ideas.
Directions
For your first assignment, Ms. Karani asks you to create a design journal, identify a management-related
problem, and complete the first two of the five steps in the design thinking process, which are
to empathize with users and define the problem you want to address.
1. Read the resource entitled “How to Create and Use a Design Journal” and create your journal. Refer back
to this resource throughout the Projects in the Goal since it explains what your journal should cover.
2. To familiarize yourself with design thinking, read through the design thinking resources. Many of these
resources will be valuable throughout the Projects in this Goal.
o
In your journal:
▪
▪
▪
take notes on any information you want to remember from the resources. Cite your sources correctly using APA style and
quotation marks for direct quotes.
describe in your own words the design thinking process.
identify a management-related problem in your workplace or community you want to address.
3. Empathize and gather feedback from end users.
o
o
o
Familiarize yourself with the resources on empathizing with end users.
Consider which tool or tools will provide you with the best, most insightful information about the problem. Pages 612 of the resource “Design Thinking Toolkit: Bootcamp Bootleg” offer some specific ways to empathize with users.
In your journal:
▪
▪
▪
o
o
▪
describe the end users. Who is most affected by this problem?
explain how you will observe the end users.
explain how you plan to gather feedback from end users about their experiences in the context of the problem you have
identified.
write down the key questions you want the feedback you receive to answer.
Observe and collect feedback from your end users.
In your journal:
▪
document your observations and the user feedback.**Remember, after each step in the design thinking process, take time to enter
in your design journal your thoughts on the design thinking process, what you are learning and any insights or questions you may
have.
4. Define the problem. The goal in this step is to create an actionable point of view (POV) statement
informed by the feedback from end users. The statement will drive the rest of your design thinking
process.
o
o
Read the resources on writing effective POV statements.
In your journal:
▪
▪
analyze your observations and the user feedback. Why does this problem exist? What are the different parts of the problem? Are
there aspects of the problem or the user feedback that conflict or show competing priorities? Identify and weigh these
competing priorities. Your analysis should provide you with insight about the end users’ perspectives on the problem and what
is needed in a solution.
write a POV statement that clearly defines the problem.
You will continue the design process in the next Project, where you will design a possible solution to the
problem you have identified.
