San Diego State University Week 2 Chapter 5 World Health Organization HW Task #1
As many of you have seen, the United State terminated relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday. The WHO focuses on three main things:
Universal health care
Preventing and responding to emergencies
Well-being for all
It is important to note that WHO can make suggestions about best practices and how to address issues around healthcare and disease, however they do not have the governing power to impose laws. The lack of power in making recommendations mandatory has historically caused tension; WHO has a set of guidelines based on empirical evidence and best practices, but it is up to each member state to decide how to enforce those guidelines.
There are currently 194 member stats, which pay mandatory contributions to belong to WHO. Additionally, states can make voluntary contributions. For example, in 2019, the US gave approximately $450 million to WHO and only 25% of that was a mandatory contribution. The WHO is also funded by private donors, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. However, the US is the biggest donor.
Below is some more information on what WHO does and what led to the decision to pull funding from the WHO.

Where do we go from here?
Now that you know more about how the WHO functions, let’s reflect on what the US leaving WHO means.
In your own words, summarize the role that WHO plays in global well-being for all and preventing and responding to emergencies.
What do you think the long-term ramifications will be for other countries without the US contributions to WHO? Hint: the information in the articles will be really helpful in forming your opinion.
How will this move be perceived by other countries? Will China become the “big player” instead of the US?
Task #2
Initial Reply Due by Thursday @ 11:59 PM | 2 Replies to Peers Due by Sunday @ 11:59 PM
This is a group discussion. You have been assigned to a student group for this discussion and the peer reviews. Click “reply” below to participate as you normally would.
Goals
Now that you know how the WHO classifies phases of disease, you will have a small group discussion with your peers to get you thinking about the dynamics of disease transmission and how diseases evolve from endemic to epidemics to (in some cases), pandemics. For this discussion, please pick a pandemic you want to focus on (NOTE: You may not pick COVID-19, you will see why below)
Initial Reply
By Thursday, post your initial reply to the following questions. Please copy and paste the questions directly into the text box and bold each of the questions so I can easily find your responses:
Identify your pandemic. Please be specific- describe the disease, the rate of infection, and how the disease is primarily transmitted.
Trace the origin of your pandemic. Where did it start and how and when did it evolve from an epidemic to a pandemic? Are there any specific groups who were impacted more than others?
What methods were used to help control disease transmission? Has the disease been eradicated? If so, how? Again, please be specific in your answers.
What lesson did the public health community learn from this disease? What recommendations do you have for addressing pandemics in the future based on the history of this disease?
Are there any strategies that were used to reduce the rate of infection that can be applied to reducing the number of new cases (incidence) of COVID-19? Provide at least 2 concrete strategies based on past pandemic research to help reduce COVID-10.
