The selected video transcript is a narration Benjamin Isaac, a Special education
researcher who is currently pursuing a doctorate in Special education. The author attempts to
influence social change by trying to show that special needs means that the can mean
even better, more magnificent, or otherwise are different from what people recognize as usual
(Benjamin, 2016). In the video, the author uses three characters that reveal different needs, who
are Skeeter, Buzz, and Gigi. Skeeter is a character with autism, Buzz, a character with ADHD,
while Gigi modeled as a character with cerebral palsy.
Example of Codes and Respective Quotes
Quotes
1And what if these special needs were depicted as merely mental and physical
conditions and not definitive characteristics of who these characters were.
2 To add authenticity to each character, I decided to have each character voiced by a
child that had that same condition.
Codes
1: Special needs
2: Authenticity
Explanation
The reasoning behind the coding is that the code falls under the in Vivo
Coding, which intends to keep the information rooted in the authors opinion (Saldaña,
2016). Notably, the coding was special needs, forming the focus of the video by
Benjamin addressing special education programs. The second code focuses on the
authenticity of the video concerning the validity and reliability of information
presented by selected characters in the video.
