1. What do you think would be the response of historical nursing leaders such as Florence Nightingale, Lillian Wald, and Mary Breckenridge if they could see what the profession of nursing looks like today?

There are many men and women who provided leadership in facilitating the achievement of the many improvements which have been done to the health care profession. They not only aided in the institutionalizing of the profession but also in transforming a profession that was once considered demeaning into one that many people now desire to join. Florence Nightingale, Lillian Wald, and Mary Breckenridge among other pioneers in the profession would be proud of the tremendous changes that have taken place in the health care profession making it the largest, most diverse and among the most respected professions within and without the health care setting.

In particular, they would be impressed by the changes that have taken place in the structure of nursing education. The health setting has changed from having nurses without any formal training to dependence on hospital- based training and later to nursing collegiate programs in community institutions, technical colleges and even universities. The modern nurse is empowered to perform various roles in the health care system. They no longer have to remain at the bedside but can also take up managerial and specialized roles. Advancements have also been made in terms of nursing research (Masters, 2018). These are some of the changes that the early pioneers advocated for which have been achieved well.
