Single Replacement Reaction of Aluminum and Copper(II) Sulfate
Procedure:
1) Using a 100 mL graduated cylinder, a volume of copper (II) sulfate solution,
from the bottle pictured below, is measured using a graduated cylinder.
Watch the first video and note the volume on Table 1 of your worksheet.
2) The copper (II) sulfate solution is transferred to a 250 mL and
approximately 1/8 teaspoon NaCl is added. The sodium chloride is a
catalyst so the exact amount is not important.
3) Aluminum metal is weighed on a balance. Note this mass on Table 1 of your
worksheet.
4) The aluminum is then placed in the copper(II) sulfate solution. Watch Video 2
and note your observations in Table 2 on your worksheet.
5) When the reaction is complete, the contents of the beaker are filtered using
gravity filtration. Watch Video 3 and note your observations in Table 2 on
your worksheet.
6) The filter paper is carefully removed from the funnel and opened, leaving the
paper and copper product to dry overnight.
7) A weighing boat is tared on the balance.
8) The dry copper metal powder is then scraped off the filter paper into the
tared weigh boat. Record the mass of the copper on Table 1 of your
worksheet.
9) Complete your worksheet, save it as a PDF file, and upload to Gradescope.

Answer
Questions
1) If your percent yield of copper was lower than 100%, which often occurs,
give two reasons why this might have happened.
2) Sometimes the percent yield of product is found to be above 100%. Besides
calculation error or reading the balance incorrectly, what else might cause
this to happen?
