700-750 words INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH (the introduction should not contain any quotes): The first 2 or 3 sentences should relay the title of the essay you are analyzing as well as the author’s name and that essay’s thesis, purpose and intended audience. The very last thing in the introduction must be your own thesis (written using 1 or 2 sentences only) for your essay.  In your thesis, you are relaying the main idea of your own essay by stating whether the essay you are analyzing makes its argument effectively.  Thus, you are making a claim about the essay’s effectiveness. Your thesis should also briefly state the main ideas to be discussed in the body paragraphs,   FIRST BODY PARAGRAPH: Provide a very brief summary of the essay you are analyzing.   You will not be writing a full summary here.   SECOND and THIRD BODY PARAGRAPHS: In each of these paragraphs, you will focus on why specifically you feel the author was successful/effective in getting the argument across. Each of these paragraphs should analyze a particular aspect of the essay in reference to a specific strength or weakness of the essay (according to your personal opinion). Focus on one strength or weakness per paragraph (and that should be the main idea in your topic sentence). The content for the rest of the paragraph should validate (with paraphrases, quotes, and personal analysis) why you feel that what you specified is a strength or weakness, in relation to the essay’s effectiveness (according to you personally).   CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH (don’t include includes quotes in the conclusion): Start the conclusion by paraphrasing your own thesis. In the rest of the conclusion, you are reflecting on your analysis and providing final thoughts.
