Just a couple of generations ago, and even today in many cultures, the idea of basing
a marriage on romantic love was unheard of. There were many practical reasons for
marriage; romantic love was not one of them. But today, our expectations around
marriage seem to be based on the idea that as individuals we alone are in charge of
the decision of whom to marry, and that romantic love—being “in love”—is an
appropriate basis for that decision. And yet, over 40% of all first marriages in Canada
eventually end in divorce. What does this tell us?
For this assignment reflect on the link between marriage and romantic love and write up
your own thoughtful opinions in a discussion paper to post in the Discussion Forum. After
you post your paper, respond to at least three other students’ posts, in their submission
threads. The following are some questions you might want to consider as a starting
point, or come up with one of your own:
➢ Is romantic love an appropriate basis for marriage, or has it been unhelpful
overall in bringing marriage satisfaction?
➢ Could arranged marriage be an attractive option? Should the choice of who we
marry be left to only us as individuals, or could it be beneficial to have our
parents involved in the decision?
➢ How do we reconcile the necessities of marital co-operation in a culture of
individualism and personal freedom?
➢ Is there another way to understand what marriage is about than the Hollywood
version of it? And why do Hollywood romance films usually end with the wedding
proposal?
In writing your paper you need to refer to and summarize key points from at least one of
the two articles below (posted in Discussion Forum folder). You could also use one of our
course articles (e.g. Helen Fisher’s “Web of Love”) as a supplementary source.
o
Tom Inglis (Irish sociologist), “Romantic Love”: This is a rather complex chapter in
Inglis’s book which contains a number of different ideas in it; don’t feel you need
to ‘cover’ the whole chapter, but if you choose this one, pick out an idea or two
that you can speak to.
o
Alain de Botton (British philosopher), “Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person”: This
is a much shorter piece, written in a bit of a tongue-in-cheek style. It’s easy to
misunderstand what he is really saying, so read it carefully.
You do not need to include a bibliography for these, but do cite the page #s referred
to. In addition, you should watch the film Arranged, which is required viewing for our
course. Here is the link to the film in the Criterion Collection, available through SMU
Library. Log in with your S# & password:
