This book gives details of how the author turned from one of the most thrilling
footballers in her Dublin community to a Heroin addict. She goes on to explain how her friend is
now an international player in the Irish team. The author believes that Heroin addiction just
happened because she didn’t plan to do it. The major influence of taking the drug was the
environments she lived in. Drug dealers were common near the area, and his father’s alcohol
addiction made it worse. Their family was also not that stable because their parents just lived for
their sake. In this book, the author attributes her Heroin addiction to feeling alone and not being
loved. Most addicts will do this when they have problems in life especially when their parents
are undergoing hardships or divorce. Children will feel left out as their parents fight every time.
The author also explains how she got into heroin drugs at the age of 13 years through her peers.
The background was also a major influence because her sister started getting into drugs after
frustrations in life. Having read this story, it is clear that Heroin ruins the lives of many
teenagers. The author had a clear part in the life of becoming a successful footballer but heroin
addiction got into her way.

The article by Patterson highlights some of the reasons why the heroin is considered one
of the most addictive drugs. According to the article, heroin is a morphine precursor substance
that gets converted by enzymes in the brain back to morphine before attaching to the opioid
receptors. A person will need larger amounts to maintain their intense highs because the brain
cells no longer respond robustly to the stimulation. Dopamine neurotransmitter is associated with
pleasurable feelings and gets diminished with increased tolerance to heroin. This leads to
compulsive drug use and drug-seeking behavior which will require more efforts and energy to
control the perceived physiologic need for the drug. The author also explains that abusers will
use heroin by smoking, snorting or injecting themselves. Impacts of heroin include are felt faster
when the drug is injected through the veins but an individual becomes high for a shorter
duration. Snorting is long lasting but more gradual. The article also gives details on what it
means to be a heroin addict for instance withdrawal symptoms, use of a large amount of money
to find, secure and use, tolerance to the drug, hazardous situations especially when driving, not
meeting the use with repeated attempts. This is common in our communities especially spending
a lot to get this drug due to strict measures put by the government. Most parents have been found
to have blacked out in front of their children due to their addiction. The author finally states that
treatment of heroin addiction starts with detoxification using clonidine to reduce symptoms like
anxiety, sweating, aches, running nose and irritability. I also believe that drug addicts need to be
taken to rehabilitation centers to put them away from accessing these drugs as they get
rehabilitated. Children need to be protected more from their parents by the state to avoid
endangering their lives.

This book is a guide of the lifelong side effects of heroin to the family and the addicts.
The author gives an overview of how heroin addicts end up taking the drug and their
psychological, emotional and physical dimensions. The author also highlights how the
rehabilitation from heroin addiction can be achieved and why the abusers need to have the hope
of having been a former addict himself. In this book, Spinney also explains the recovery phase
and the world of an addict. He also gives details of how the family suffers especially trauma,
endangering children’s lives, and financial burden in rehabilitating and loss of money to get more
Heroin by the addicts etc. Based on what the author discusses, I believe this book is an educative
material that gives heroin addicts a determination and hopes to get rehabilitation from this selfdestructive drug. There are many negative effects that heroin addiction contributes to in our
communities for instance accidents, increase in crime, family issues like breakups etc.
