How to Format a Paper for Dr. Peris’ Class
Your paper should have 1-inch margins on all sides. Text should be a standard,
legible font (like Times New Roman or Cambria). Use 12-point font and double-space, with
no extra spaces between paragraphs. Include the page number with your last name in the
header of all pages. Single-space your name, course, instructor, and date information at the
top left of the first page. Leave one single-spaced blank line after the date, then type your
paper’s title in boldface. Begin double-spacing with the title. Your paper should look just
like this example. These instructions are intended to be similar to MLA formatting, so you
should use that as a reference if you have questions not addressed here. Failure to follow
these instructions may affect your grade.
Assignments often specify a number of pages in length as a requirement. For
example, a paper may be required to have 4-6 pages. In this example, your paper should
include at least four full pages, and no more than six full pages. You should adhere to pagelength instructions. Do not request to turn in a paper longer than specified in the
assignment. If a maximum length is not stated (“three pages, minimum,” for example), then
you should consider the maximum to be one page longer than the stated length
requirement. All students’ electronic submissions should be in the .PDF format.
When referencing sources of your research, you should use in-text citations
following the Modern Language Association (MLA) format, unless specifically told
otherwise in the assignment. Do not use footnotes. Instructions on how to use this format

for various types of sources can be found in A Writer’s Reference by Diana Hacker and
Nancy Sommers or numerous online sources.
When writing in-text citations for books or other publications, include the author’s
last name and page number. Use just page number if the author’s name is clear from the
preceding text. For example:
— Vavreck explains that an incumbent should run a “clarifying” campaign if the
economy is strong (180).
— An incumbent should run a “clarifying” campaign if the economy is strong
and an “insurgent” campaign otherwise (Vavreck 180).
In-text citations for websites should include in the text the first item that appears in the
Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article name, website
name, film name). Do not include URLs in-text. For example:
— An evaluation of the efficacy of the various candidates’ advertising declared
Warren’s to be the best (“Who’s Running The Best Campaign Ads?”).
If you are citing something from social media, you can use the following examples as
guidance:
— Twitter: Right after leaving the stage at the town hall, Joe Biden posted a
video to make sure he was the first to comment on his own performance
(@JoeBiden, 11 Nov 2019).
— Instagram: In one photo, Buttigieg is shown next to his dog, cooking over the
kitchen sink in jeans, looking quite domestic (chasten.buttigieg, 12 Nov
2019).
— Facebook: Yang’s first television ad shows him standing in front of a US flag

with patriotic music playing (Andrew Yang for President 2020, 7 Nov 2019).
— YouTube: Sanders includes in his video throngs of admirers, over whom he is
shouting that he will fight for them (Sanders, 1 Oct 2019)
