For this essay, you will choose a problem or difficulty encountered either in your field of study, your life here at UTK, or your hobby. You will consider possible approaches to the problem, discuss what (if anything) has already been done, and consider what might still be done to address the problem.
The first step should be to fully describe the problem, and what factors contribute to the problem (you will use cause and effect language for this–refer to your handout). You should use at least one full paragraph for this. Then, you will describe what has already been done to address the problem. For both of these steps, you should consult research sources–you should consult at least three sources to help you develop these sections. This step should take at least one full paragraph, and should refer to at least two approaches that have already been considered.

You should then consider what solutions have been proposed or suggested, or what solutions have been implemented elsewhere to address this problem. This too will require research.
Finally, you should include a paragraph (probably your conclusion) in which you support either one of the ideas researchers have had on how to solve the problem, or create your own potential solution.
A word on personal experience: since some of your topics address issues you yourself are involved in, you may include your personal experience if appropriate. The best place to do this will be in the introduction (where you might give a specific example of your experience with this problem) or in the section in which you describe the solutions already in place.
A word on outside research: you should consult at least three outside sources for information on this problem and potential solutions. You should USE each of them somewhere in your paper (that means you should include either a summary or a direct quotation from each), and include appropriate in-text citation and a correctly-formatted Works Cited list.
Required length: 2-3 pages.
Sources required: at least three.
