ANALYZING DATA PROJECT
Maagoul
Prof: H.
Instructions
◦
For due date, check our Course Outline & Schedule
◦
Only individual submissions are accepted. Each student will analyze a different Data Set that was posted
Blackboard or just click the hyperlink words below (Use only the yellow column):
Population of China
Oil Consumption in Mbtu
New Case Estimates
Mileage Guide 2015 cars
Cost of Private Public HE
Cancer Death Trend Male
Cancer Death Trend Female
❖ Your work must be typed and submitted as a PDF or a MS Word file only, use Arial/
Times New Roman font #11. Use the Read me First TAB in Blackboard then click on
the folder: Project: Upload it Here then follow the prompt for submission.
❖ Respond the questions in strict order.
❖ Do not submit Excel files. Copy the portion of the Excel worksheet you need and paste it into the Word or
PDF document.
❖ Round-off Rule: In the final answer, carry one more decimal place than is present in the original set of
data.
PART 1: DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
1. Clearly indicate which data are you selected. The selected data will be considered as your population. Use
the data values and organize them to compute the Mean, Median, Mode, Range, Variance, and Standard
Deviation. Feel free to use EXCEL, your calculator or any other software.
-12 ptsMean µ =
Median =
Mode =
Range =
Variance =
Standard Deviation σ =
2. Find the following percentiles: P10, P35, P80 and explain the meaning of each percentile
-12 pts-
a) P10 =
Interpretation:
b) P35 =
Interpretation:
c) P80 =
Interpretation
3. Find outliers in your set of data by using the IQR method.
-15 pts-
Outliers =
Interpretation:
Note: Besides listing the numbers that represent outliers, put the numbers in a context. For example,
Scoring 91 goals in one year in a soccer season is considered a data outlier. Messi, the Barcelona star,
scored 91 goals in 2012.
4. Use the data values to construct a Frequency Distribution with 8-12 classes. Remember a frequency
distribution is a TABLE with two columns, classes and frequency!!
-10 pts-
5. Find the Mean and the Standard Deviation of the frequency distribution. Compare your results to the mean
and standard deviation found in questions 1 and 2.
-10 ptsMean =
Standard Deviation=
Comparison:
6. Organize the data to summarize and graph the data utilizing any 3 methods of descriptive statistics that
appropriately depict your data as described in Chapter 2 of your textbook, (e.g., histogram, stem & leaf, pie
chart, dot plot, etc.)
-15 pts-
7. Research about the topic that was assigned to you and give more than one page of general information. Cite
the source(s). Font: Arial or times New Roman #11
-15 pts-
Part 2: INFERENTIAL STATISTICS
8. Randomly select a large sample (more than 30 data values) from the original data set you analyzed in
question #1. You can use Excel or any free randomizer that is available in the internet. Do not do
“convenience” sampling.
List the sample here:
-5pts-
Describe clearly the method of selecting the random sample:
9. Calculate 80%, 90% and 99% confidence intervals for the mean.
Include here your sample mean, sample standard deviation, and sample size.
-5 pts-
20pts-
x̄” =

n
a) 80% confidence interval and interpretation:
b) 90% confidence interval and interpretation:
c) 99% confidence interval and interpretation:
d) How do these confidence intervals relate to the population mean you calculated in question #1, when the
set of data was treated as a population?
10. Use the sample you chose to perform a meaningful hypothesis test for the mean. Include all the
assumptions, identify clearly the null and alternate hypotheses, show the method used to test the hypothesis
and write a clear conclusion
x̄” =

S

Hypothesis conclusion:
11. Write your conclusions about your learning in this project (more than one page).

Round your final answers properly and remember, I am only an email away
for any questions!
