POLS 103 Missouri Baptist University American Cultural and Political Values Discussion Please respond with 100 words or more Harry S. Truman: Embodiment of Missourian and American Cultural and Political Values?
PLEASE respond to the discussion using 100 words or more. Perhaps
no one in Missouri history embody’s the overlapping politics and values
of Missouri and of the United States quite as famously as Harry S.
Truman, who was born May 8, 1884 in this modest home in Lamar, Missouri (Links to an external site.), volunteered in 1917 and served in World War I (Links to an external site.),
began his political career in 1922 as an administrative judge (really,
an executive position on the order of a county commissioner) in Jackson
County, Missouri, went on to serve from late 1935 into early 1945 as
U.S. Senator from Missouri, then, for several weeks as U.S.
Vice-President in 1945, and, finally, as President of the United States,
from the time of President Franklin Roosevelt’s death in April of 1945,
until he left office in January of 1953, whereupon Truman retired to
his home in Independence, Missouri, where he lived until his death in
1972. Let’s take a virtual tour of Truman’s Independence, Missouri
home. Here is the outside (Links to an external site.)
of the late President’s home. Please take about ten to thirty
minutes and “walk around” the interior of the home virtually, beginning here, in the kitchen (Links to an external site.). Why have I dropped you into the middle of the retired president’s
kitchen? Like the rest of the house, it has been kept just as it was
when he died. To my thinking, that kitchen, and especially its floor,
gives evidence of somewhat-lost virtues, that were a part of
Truman’s–and, perhaps, at one time, many Missourians’ and Americans’
character. What am I referencing? Well, look closely at the linoleum
floor in that kitchen. Sometime prior to his 1972 death, when that
floor covering began to fray and to peel up from the sub-floor, the
ex-President of the United States of America went down into his basement
in that home, retrieved, a fistful of nails, returned to the kitchen
and hammered those nails, which you can still see (Links to an external site.),
into the linoleum to hold it down. Can you imagine an elderly
ex-President of the United States today living so modestly, so frugally,
and so independently–as perhaps befits a citizen of Independence,
Missouri? Now, click your way through the interior of Truman’s home. What does that interior tell you
about his values? If in fact, we cannot imagine a former POTUS living
so close to a middle-class lifestyle today, what does that tell us about
income disparity in America today, versus in 1972, when Truman died?
1972 was, in fact, the year when, by some economic measures, the real
wages of middle-class Americans reached their all-time peak,
considerably exceeding inflation-adjusted numbers today. Are Missouri
and American political and economic values quite so modest and practical
today? Could a “simple man from Missouri,” as Truman has been called,
become President of the United States today? Will we ever again have
the degree of relative income equality that largely prevailed in the
United States by 1972, but, if economic statistics be believed, has not
since? Purchase answer to see full
