Pick one of the authors we have discussed up to this week (Week 10). Attached to them are suggested aspects of history to explore. If you find other aspects to explore within these works that interests you more, then you may certainly explore them as well. If you decide to explore a Puritan, it must be someone you have not written about before. ·         Greenlander’s Saga = Viking culture, early navigation, medieval ideas of America ·         Native American Legends = religious beliefs, daily life, importance of nature ·         Roger Williams = religious beliefs, first contact with Native Americans ·         Puritans (See Virtual Field Trip 1 Assignment sheet for more ideas) ·         The Founding Fathers = nature (natural rights), political innovations disagreements between themselves, Revolutionary War ·         The US Constitution & Bill of Rights = reform, Changing times, individuality, racial discrimination of the time ·         Phyllis Wheatley = slavery & freedom/equality, religion, Revolutionary War, nature ·         Washington Irving = nature, role of supernatural, use of humor, daily rural life ·         Caroline Kirkland = use of humor, daily frontier life, the early pioneers, nature, individuality Read their work & use it as a jumping off point to explore an aspect of Early American life – religion, slavery & racial discrimination, daily life, significant events like the Revolutionary War and the beginning of the Wild West, the authors themselves, etc. Make sure to reference one or two specific examples from your chosen author that inspired your exploration. Also, include at least 1 outside source, and make sure to properly cite both in the assignment. These are the critical questions to ask: How does your findings add depth to what you read? What did you find interesting and why? Write 500 words minimum, and use a specific example (s) from the author you picked.   Requirements: o   A thoughtful explanation of how your findings connect or deepen your understanding of the chosen author/literature o   500-650 words o   MLA Formatting: Double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman o   A works cited page (this is not included in the word count) §  At least two items = the textbook and 1 outside source
