Supply a conceptual reasoning for why you are using certain physical laws, and equations. Any
equation or physical concept that is used without proper qualitative justification will receive a
deduction.
Question 1: Question 29-20 from Halliday & Resnick
In Fig. 29-48, part of a long insulated wire carrying current
i = 5.78 mA is bent into a circular section of radius R = 1.89
cm. In unit-vector notation, what is the magnetic field at
the center of curvature C if the circular section (a) lies in the
plane of the page as shown and (b) is perpendicular to the
plane of the page after being rotated 90◦ counterclockwise
as indicated?
Question 2: You have an air filled cylindrical solenoid is made up of N loops, has a radius r, and a length `.
a) Calculate this solenoid’s self-inductance.
b) Suppose you have another solenoid with the same geometrical information (radius r and length `), however it is
filled with iron whose permeability is µ rather than air (µair ≈ µ0 ). Calculate the number of loops this solenoid
would need to have so that is has same inductance as the inductor in part (a). Hint: The turn density is not
going to be the same.
c) Using the following numbers get a numerical answer for parts (a) and (b): N = 2800 loops, r = .05 m, ` = 0.25 m,
and µ = 1200 µ0 .
Question 3: Question 30-34 in Halliday & Resnick
In Fig. 30-55, a long rectangular conducting loop, of width
L, resistance R, and mass m, is hung in a horizontal, uni~ that is directed into the page and
form magnetic field B
that exists only above line aa.
The loop is then dropped; during its fall, it accelerates until
it reaches a certain terminal speed vt . Ignoring air drag,
find an expression for vt .
Note: You do not have to solve for the velocity as a function of time. You only need to find the terminal speed.
