Description

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) are 3 major outdoor air pollutants. Using full sentences, answer the following questions about these pollutants. Use tables and figures (data!) to justify your arguments. 1) What are the major sources of these three pollutants in southern Ontario? How are they formed? (9 marks) 2) What are the long-term trends in average annual concentrations of these three pollutants in Windsor and Toronto? Compare the trends to Ontario guidelines for protection of human health. (9 marks) 3) How are these air pollutant levels affected by sunlight, if at all? (9 marks) 4) Why are different air quality standards set for 1 hour, 8 hour, 24 hour and 1 year exposures? (9 marks) 5) Describe the types of air pollutants other than CO2 emitted by a coal fired power plant without adequate pollution controls, their dispersal and their impacts on ecosystems.(18 marks) 6) Choose a large city in the developing world. What are the major sources of air pollution in this city? How do air pollutant levels compare to levels in Toronto? How do residents cope with the air quality? (10 marks) 7) Describe the potential human health impacts of air pollutants identified in question 6. (12 marks) Marks will also be given for: • Use of properly labelled and tables and figures referenced in your text to support your arguments and descriptions. (10 marks) • Understandable text and cogent arguments. (10 marks) • Appropriate use of scholarly literature and reference material with proper citations. (5 marks) The text should not exceed 12 pages double spaced (not including citations) using Times New Roman 12 point font. I will be uploading notes that will help answering some of these questions
