Task: Conduct careful observations of your behavior in familiar everyday situations to identify a unique and overlooked skill that you’ve developed due to experience in the observed context. Describe your findings.
CONSIDER CHOOSING A OBSERVED UNIQUE SKILL THAT MAY DEVELOP IN A TO RETAIL STORE ENVIRONMENT OR ONE WITH COMPUTER (ONLY ONE). IT SHOULD BE ONE SPECIFIC SKILL THAT IS DESCRIBED IN DEPTH.
After identifying the unique skill that has developed as an adaptation to a particular task in a particular context. The “skill” you identify should be a form of activity (thought/behavior) that would not be expected spontaneously from a competent novice who has never done this particular task before, or who has had only brief training. Furthermore, the skilled approach should not merely be a faster or more fluid version of the novice’s approach; rather, it should represent a significant developmental change in approaching a particular task.
*If at all possible, try to choose a developed skill that is unique, rather than something that is already widely acknowledged.*
Observe yourself carrying out familiar tasks in daily life. Focus on things that you do repeatedly, e.g., if you’re a cashier, observe the way you take money from a customer, and hand them the receipt and their change. Do not exclude tasks because they are too mundane. It may be helpful to simply pay attention to yourself as you go through the motions of your activity in everyday contexts since you might find aspects of your activity
Pay very close attention to the specific and concrete details of what you do, moment-by-moment, as you go through these tasks. It is important to let go of the illusion that you know what you do in mundane situations. Try to approach each situation you observe with “fresh eyes,” looking at precisely what is happening, at a concrete level.
Studying your activity on a concrete level means looking at the specific features of your moment-by-moment movements, utterances, and the specific physical context in which they occur. Do not just consider a situation on an abstract or general level (“at work” or “working in customer service”). Focus on the specific details of what is happening, such as the following: Where are people standing/looking? What is the task they have to do? How much time do they have to do it—and is timeliness an issue? What are they doing with their hands? How are they holding/carrying/manipulating objects?
