New York University What to The Slave Is the Fourth of July Analysis Starting with a brief analysis of the following paragraph from Frederick Douglass’s speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” explain what kind of action Douglass advocates to bring about societal change (in his case, the abolition of slavery). Put bluntly, is he advocating debate, political changes, legal changes, or violent actions?
Start with a brief paraphrase and analysis of this line:
“The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed.”
You should explain what “the feeling…conscience… propriety…hypocrisy of the nation” mean. Whose feeling? Whose conscience? Where, and how, can one determine the feeling, conscience, and propriety of the nation? Be specific in your explanation. The point is to explain what Douglass means concretely.
You should read the entire short speech and draw on other parts of it for your paper.
Double-space your paper, remember to give it a title, Write at least 800 words.

Here’s the passage:
“At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. O! had I the ability, and could I reach the nation’s ear, I would, to-day, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced.
