NA Democratic Peace Theory and Role of The Media Discussion The first part of the chapter focuses on democratic peace theory, however the second half of the chapter focuses on the role of the media, public opinion and interest groups in shaping foreign policy. Keeping this in mind, review the chapter’s description of media, public opinion and interest groups and then discuss one of the following questions.
1. Can you think of recent events where a sensationalist press helped drive a particular foreign policy? Give an example of an event and support your argument with research.
2. How has the Internet changed the role of the media? How have Facebook and other forms of social media changed the role of the media? Can citizens take some role in making the press more responsible? Explain?
3. Strategically convincing the public that the media can’t be trusted, has been an increasingly popular political ploy in recent days. The term “fake news” is common place now. Can the media ever regain the trust of the public? Do they have a responsibility to regain the public’s trust? Can it be done? How?

We can conclude from this chapter, as well as the previous chapter on liberalism, that despite being under the same umbrella of one ideology “conservatism”, there are still quite a few disagreements with the conservatism subgroups on what’s best for reaching societies goals. Ideologies rarely speak with a single voice, they may resemble each other but have aspects that are completely different. This chapter outlines some of the many variances within conservatism. In fact some say that “conservatism” is so divided today that it doesn’t make sens e anymore to think of it as one single ideology. Given what you’ve read in the chapter, as well as what you’ve read in recent political news, is it accurate to say that conservatism beliefs are so vastly different that it should be broken up into different categories? Research contemporary conservative arguments, identify what type of conservative are they, and discuss whether or not you agree. Below are some links to help you research current conservative statements and arguments.
