Example 1
Module 1, Lesson 1. Employee Motivation
I chose the book “Who Moved My Cheese?”, written by Spencer Johnson (1998). It
focuses on four characters that all react to change in different ways. Cheese, and the maze are
represented as the metaphors to the paths we take. The characters consisted of two mice
named Sniff and Scurry, and two little people named Hem and Haw. The two mice were simple,
prepared, and adaptable, while the two little people were emotional, and disliked change. It
began with the four characters searching for cheese, once found, Hem and Haw became
comfortable and dependent on the cheese, while Scurry and Sniff began noticing the cheese
was getting smaller, and older. Once the cheese moved, the two mice immediately began
searching for new cheese, with success. The two little people did not know how to react and
waited for the cheese to come back. Haw decided the cheese was not coming back and began
his search, while Hem stayed where he was comfortable. After several days taking new routes,
and leaving encouraging notes, Haw found the mother-load of cheese. Meanwhile Hem
continued to wait for “his” cheese to come back and took much longer to come to terms with the
new change. This story represented the different paths people can take when change happens.
Some will adapt immediately while appreciating the change, and others will not. If change is not
accepted, goals in life will not be achieved.
Application
I can relate this change to my most recent job. I was previously in the Cardiovascular
Recovery Room and accepted a new job at an Ambulatory Surgery Center in the Recovery
Room. Within the first week of my hire, I was told I needed to learn Endoscopy as part of my job
description. I had never worked this before and had no idea where to even begin. I was a little
hesitant at first, relating to the character Haw, but finally took the steps to begin learning. I was
in training for a few weeks and learned an entire new specialty. My cheese had been moved
from my comfortable Recovery Room experience, to a specialty I never thought I would work in.
I successfully learned Endoscopy, just like Haw finally found his cheese. I hope to increase my
adaptability to change and be more like Scurry and Sniff who were prepared for anything. As a
future leader, change will happen daily, and I must be prepared for anything while supporting
staff along the way. I believe this relates to Module 1 Lesson Motivation. I have to be able to
motivate myself to appreciate change before I can motivate staff and allow them to trust the new
processes.

Example 2
The concepts learned in “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson (1998) apply to
Module 1, Lesson 1: Employee Motivation.
Summary
“Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson (1998) begins with a conversation
among friends at a reunion. Each is reminiscing about events in their lives when one offers to
tell a story that helped him conquer the fear of change. The story is about four characters,
Scurry, Sniff Hem and Haw, who live in a maze while trying to find their lifeline: cheese. Initially
they all find cheese and are happy with their station in life; however how they each acted after
their discovery was very different. Scurry and Sniff continued to work hard day after day to make
sure they were prepared for small changes they were noticing. Hem and Haw became
complacent and failed to notice subtle changes until the cheese was suddenly gone.
Scurry and Sniff immediately went back to work to find new cheese, and they did, but
Hem and Haw struggled with the reality that their cheese was gone. As Haw began to change
his way of thinking, he realized fear was preventing him from being happy and finding new
cheese. Hem was paralyzed by fear of the unknown and maddened by the loss of his cheese
making him unable to change. When Haw finally acted despite his fears, he was able to find
new cheese, having to leave his stubborn friend behind. The moral of the story being that
change is inevitable. In order to be successful at any endeavor we must be open to change,
realize when it is happening and act accordingly.
Application
In my nursing practice, I am currently applying what I learned from this book. I have
been working on my master’s degree with the intention of pursuing a lower level leadership
position of Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM). Last year, after being in the comfortable in the same
role for five years, I accepted a new position in the trauma-neuro ICU with the potential of
obtaining a CNM position after obtaining a year of ICU experience. Since accepting this role, the
position of CNM within Banner Health was eliminated. I have been frustrated by this fact and
uncertain of what my future plans are now. This forced me to reevaluate.
My true passion has always been education. I love precepting new nurses and even
began pursuing a degree in education immediately after high school before life got in the way
and prevented me from continuing. The elimination of the CNM role made me realize that
perhaps administration is not the only option for me and reignited my desire to teach. Since
starting this class I have accepted a clinical instructor position with the community college I
initially obtained my associate’s through. While I have not even been able to act in this role yet,
this is the first time I have been excited about my role in months! Overcoming my fear of being
comfortable has opened the door for new opportunities for me, new cheese.
