1. While Kogachi’s narrator discusses some of the traumas and anxieties caused by his
“weak” wrists and the effeminacy they suggest, his discussion of his wrists and how
they impact his life are much more complex than this.In what ways is pleasure and
other positive experiences also made possible because of this thing that some see
as a “weakness”?
2. In reflecting on her relationship with her transgender partner, Nelson moves between
descriptions of some of the (lesbian) women she has encountered throughout her life.
How are the notions of masculinity and femininity depicted in these descriptions?
How are these notions (of masculinity and femininity) challenged by the ways in
which Nelson walks us through her visions of these women and the presence of her
non-binary, transgender partner?
3. Unlike with the works from the previous units, discussions of race in the texts of this
unit are much less obvious. How is race handled in these texts, particularly in their
concerns with sexuality and gender performance? What can the ways in which race
is handled in these texts teach us about how race works in how we come to
understand the LGBTQ+ community?

Commented [RL1]: Notice how the post begins by
relating the reading to a larger context. In doing so, the
author demonstrates the post to be about more than either
the text or the assignment at hand. This, along with the end
salutation help to give the post a more conversation and
approachable tone/feel.
Commented [RL2]: Notice how the author’s tone
demonstrates an attempt at a conversation. This is helpful
because these posts are your way to converse with your
classmates about your opinions and ideas on the readings.
I have provided you with this sample, not as an example of a superb submission, but in an attempt to help
give you an idea, and guidance on what is being asked of you. Do not take these posts lightly. They are
meant to challenge you and inspire you to think critically about the readings and, dare I say, the world at
large. Though they may appear simple, they are deceptively complex. An adequate post will address the
prompts at face-value, answering only what appears. The more successful posts, however, will not only
answer what is asked, but will recognize the complexity hidden within each posed question and begin
unravelling some of those complexities.

Below, you will find the prompt and sample responses, along with comments I have made. Again, neither
of these are perfect. They simply offer a good starting point for understanding the Discussion Post
assignments. As is the case with all of your academic and argumentative writings, each of your writings
should be tailored to fit both you and the prompt you are addressing. Take from this the lessons, not the
writing. My comments are not comprehensive. Look at what I have said, as well as what I have not said,
and use these lessons to craft your own posts.
However, one thing that could be strengthened here is a
clearer statements on the author’s main opinion or point-
the author’s direct answer to the prompt. Without a clearly
articulated—that is, without a forcefully stated-main
opinion, the author leaves himself with an ambiguous
argument is the suggested meaning concerned with fear or
is the meaning concerned with a certain impossibility of
desire?)

In the discussion itself, remember to respond to others’ posts when you post, showing how your
ideas relate to what has already been said. In addition to posting your analysis you will also
comment on the initial posts of two other classmates.

However, two points are important to make:
1. The transition into this paragraph is a bit rough (in this
case, a smoother transition might be: “Evidence for my
suggested meaning can be found in the story’s title), and
2.The reference to the title is not connected to whatever
point was being made in the previous paragraph.

Initially reading the short story, I couldn’t help but wonder if the author Kate herself had
felt like this at some point in her life. She was living in a time period where women’s
oppression was very normal, and the force of the emotions the character felt after her initial
grief seemed to almost emanate from a deeply personal experience. The idea that the
protagonist Louise was living in a marriage she intrinsically despised due to oppression is
confirmed when, midway through the short story, “there was something coming to her and
she was waiting for it, fearfully” (Chopin, “The Story of an Hour”). The key word for me here
was “Fearfully”. The happiness, relief, and freedom she knew was uncontrollably coming
could not even be accepted immediately out of a lingering fear she had felt all her life and
marriage.
How points, sentences, thoughts, and paragraphs are
transitioned into matter. Rather than helping to build a
cohesive and fluid argument, this transition disrupts the
flow, suggesting the discussion of the title that is to follow
as a new and separate point, rather than as a point that
supports or builds on what has been initially stated.
Commented [RL4]: Notice how the author attempts to
explain the importance of the textual element he has
chosen. This is an important step because it demonstrates
that the author understands that his readers will not
necessarily see things the way he does. By thoroughly
explaining the importance you see in things, you can more
effectively ensure that you are getting your point across.

The other aspect that really stood out to me was the title itself. It’s as if Chopin is taking this
extremely short, hour long event, and fitting in and entire concept of what generations of
past women have endured. Grief to fear, fear to relief, relief to pure happiness, happiness to
shock, and shock to dead. She had endured too long and felt too much pain. At the
realization that her freedom was gone when her husband walked through the door, her weak
heart couldn’t take it any longer.
However, there are gaps in the author’s analysis that
weaken the analysis’ effectiveness. For instance, how does
an entire history fit into such a short time in a way that is
lived by the protagonist? Make sure that you follow the trail
of your thoughts to their conclusions. Don’t take for granted
that important points like this (points that serve as the

Post 1:
Reading the stories of Phoenix and Granny Weatherall opened my eyes to some of the challenges of
growing old. While Both protagonists faced challenges, Phoenix’s issues seemed more difficult. She was
a poor, old woman of color, with no family but her sick grandson. In my opinion both women showed
signs of dementia. Granny Weatherall, however had family to help attend to her medical condition. I
struggled with deciding which woman had more issues. I was emotionally affected by Granny’s death,
and how she felt that God jilted her. However, there was something about Phoenix’s story that broke
my heart, and connected me to her experiences. It reminded me of own Grandma that lived in the south
during the setting of this piece. Due to the connection I felt with Phoenix, I feel her challenges were
greater. [sic]
Commented [RL1]: Notice without the prompt, this
response seems a bit abstract and “unexpected”? Rather
than this approach, attempt to contextualize your
discussion. (This is the same strategy used for essays as
well.) For instance, since this post asked you to decide
which of the two protagonists had the more difficult
challenge, you might have started out with a statement of
how reading Welty’s story made you think of your
grandmother. This, then would have led you into your point
that you feel Phoenix’s challenges to be the greater.

This might have looked something like this: Reading Welty’s
story, “A Worn Path,” made me think of my grandmother
and her challenges growing up and living in the South during
segregation. Because of my feelings for my grandmother, 1
feel that Phoenix’s challenges were greater than Granny
Weatheral’s.

Notice how the example contextualizes its discussion and its
claim directly addresses the posed question. It should be
clear in these posts, as well as in your essays-and all of
your writing, really-to what you are responding. You
cannot take for granted that people will be able to “make
the connection.” Furthermore, the information you use to
contextualize your discussion should be specific and
relevant to the actual discussion you are going to engage.

Commented [RL2]: It’s not clear how this statement
supports your main argument, nor is it clear why this is
relevant. Be sure not to just fly through a number of points
because you feel you should. Everything you include should
be clearly relevant to the larger point you are making.
Because the discussion posts are so short, it is important
not to get sidetracked. The shorter the writing, the more
direct you must be because you leave no room for stray
thoughts.
Commented [RL3]: Examples from both your
grandmother’s experiences (since you’ve brought this up)
and from the actual text you’re addressing should be used.
In the case of the text, it is best to use direct quotes
whenever possible because it will make your points more
apparent. When using examples from your, or other
peoples’ experiences, be sure not to get carried off in the
process of telling a story. It is a specific example you want,
not a lengthy narrative.
