Merce Cunningham “Sounddance”

At the beginning of the paper must discuss the significance of the word “Sounddance,” and how the reference of the word helps to identify the meaning behind the movement of Merce Cunningham’s work. Within the body of the paper must discuss how Cunningham’s choreography utilized the elements of space, time, and energy within the paper.        Within the conclusion of the paper must include an ending statement that connects the significance or main points discussed within the paper.                                                          (A conclusion of your thoughts in the third person). Try to get inside the head of Merce Cunningham. What were his intentions and were they successfully communicated?  What do you think he was trying to say? Identify the purpose of his choreography and the emotional intent of the dance choreography and/or dancer(s).  Did the piece express a specific theme(s)?  Are you able to make a clear explanation of what you think the dance was about?  Analyze the symbolism. Discuss the choreography in terms of fluidity and flow.  How did the dancers move in the space and what or how was their attack on the dance moves?  The energy of the dance.  Make general comments in the third person which would include a detailed description of the choreography.  For example:  “The dance ensemble moved through space with slow and sustained movement creating a variety of shapes as they held on to each other in a loose yet defined structure of movement that posed technique, fluidity, and intent.  The abstract movement performed to minimalist music did not necessarily retain a meter beat, but did display a sense of conformity with the dancers’ as a variety of choreography was being performed throughout the stage.”—Chandra Greene What feelings did the concert or piece evoke within yourself?  What thoughts did you have while watching the piece?  In constructing your critique, reflect on why you have had certain reactions.  Always back up your assertions, positive or negative with concrete examples.  Don’t just be a negative critic; offer your thoughts in a constructive way
