RESEARCH PAPER
As we have discussed in class, a research paper is a way of exploring a topic that you find
interesting and important. You have already developed a research question and conducted library
research, so now it is time to communicate your analysis of what you discovered in writing for
an audience of your peers.
Assignment:
Write an argument based on your answer to the research question you developed earlier this
quarter (see Chapter 3 in The Craft of Research). Employ the elements of argument from The
Craft of Research to write your research paper. Keep in mind that you can only claim what your
sources can support. This paper is not a summary of your sources, but an informed argument.
Include a 3” x 4” labeled graph or table and a Works Cited page. The visual is your original
work—a visual representation that synthesizes important parts of your argument. The minimum
page count is 11 FULL pages. The maximum page count is 15 full pages. The graph or table and
Works Cited page are in addition to the required page length.
Follow MLA conventions for papers including graphs and tables in A Writer’s Reference, C tab,
pp. 17-19.

Annotated Bibliography
XYZ: I am researching the idea of exceptionalism and racial superiority in sports due to
someone’s race, because I want to find out if there is actually an advantage in sports
based on one’s race and the social consequences it has in order to to help my reader
understand what challenges certain athletes go through and if the idea of superiority is
what’s causing all the tension.
Adesioye, Lola. “Lola Adesioye: The Lack of Black Swimmers at the Olympics Doesn’t
Mean Race Determines Athletic Prowess.” The Guardian, Guardian News and Media,
25 Aug. 2008,
This article looks at the idea of how race can be a potential deciding factor in
sports. The author claims how the majority of people do believe that there is a racial
advantage and especially when it comes to African Americans due to their superior
athletic abilities. She uses different sports such as basketball and sprinting to state her
reasons and how black athletes are exceptionally dominant in those fields. The author
then uses the data collected by sports analyst, USA’s official sports data and
professional records such as sprint times, MVP titles, and leagues won to support her
reasoning and strong claim of black athletes dominance. Finally the author warrants her
Ismail 2
work by stating that sports are a field where racial generalisation is somewhat
acceptable simply due to the clear gap difference between white and black athletes.
The source is a very reliable one for my research since it relates directly to my
subject. It also has the author’s name, the respectable site in which it was published to,
and the year of the publication. It also states that the author is a political commentator
and broadcaster. With intended audience being African American athletes and scholars
in the field. The main goal of this article was to show that there is a clear difference in
athletic abilities between white and black athletes. Which leads to its purpose of helping
me find this difference so I can establish a better idea and overall look on the issue.
However, it is limited in its focus on one sport only.
The article is very useful to my research since it gave me perspective from actual
data on the difference in abilities in certain races. It fits relatively well with the idea of
exceptionalism and superiority in ports which is the main foundation of my research. It
provides very insightful information on the subject while showcasing its actual effect and
difference. A difference in that is surprisingly still somewhat acceptable in sports which
expands on the racial normalities stated by author Anderson Paul in my other source.
Overall, it gave me some much needed understanding to better formulate my research.
Anderson, paul. “Racism in Sports: A Question of Ethics.” HeinOnline, 2013,
heinonline.org/HOL/LandingPage?handle=hein.journals%2Fmqslr6&div=22&id=&page=
.
The article by author Anderson is one where the discussion of ethics due to
racism that is show in sports is the main conflict at the time. He claims that sports are
usually portrayed as this perfect example of how race is not an issue, but in reality it is a
dark twisted place where many African American student athletes are facing a variety of
Ismail 3
different racial conflicts and abuse. The author states how those athletes face
discrimination, racial slurs, isolation from the rest of the campus, and the constant
reminder that they are here only for sports as some of his many reasons. He then backs
those reasons up by going back to the roots of the problem and discussing major events
and issues that caused racism in the United states. He also uses different studies,
athletes, and teams such as the 1987 Los Angeles Dodgers as his evidence. Then he
warrants the fact, that racial conflicts in sports have stemmed from the same
complications that caused social racism in the first place.
The source is a reliable one since it is a published article by the the Marquette
Sports Law Review which is a law review both edited and published by Marquette
university law students. The author is also credible since he is the director of the
National Sports Law Institute and Adjunct Professor of Law in Marquette University. The
reason behind this article is to review the laws in regards of race in the field of sports
and also to shed light on the many issues that black athletes go through with its
limitation being the focus on mainly college athletes and not professionals. Thus making
the audience of this article to be law students, social workers, and ones interested in the
subject of racism and its effect on sports.
This article will be effective in shaping my overall thoughts and understanding of
the subject because it gave me insight on the subject from a law standpoint. It
discussed why the conflict exists going back to its very roots, and how many people
ignore due to the misconception that sports is this one happy place where race is not a
deciding factor. It will also establish a great connection with my other sources such as
Dr.Ono’s journal of the rhetoric of race since it will directly build up on the ethics and
morals of racism that was previously discussed in the journal. That alongside new facts
and data will give me more information to build a better analysis on the subject as a
whole.
Boyd, Todd. Young, Black, Rich, and Famous: the Rise of the NBA, the Hip Hop
Invasion, and the Transformation of American Culture. University of Nebraska Press,
2003.
The book by author Dr.Boyd discusses the state of distraught that both the hip
hop and basketball communities are suffering from while using both worlds of as his
Ismail 4
main metaphor to explore bigger themes such as race, class and identity. He claims
that basketball and hip hop from a black point of view have gone from being criticised by
the American mainstream to being a global phenomenon. Some of the reasons that he
mentions are how hip hop is used to take out the black voice that has been suffocating
for a long time now, while the NBA became dominated by black men who defied the
white mores and made a disturbance in the status of society. Both working
simultaneously to the idea of being young, back, rich and famous. He then backs those
reasons up by using evidence in the form of Nas’s 9th solo album hip hop is dead and
Michael Jordan’s insane rise . Finally he warrants that both cultures have created a
generation that refuses to cooperate while forcing its importance in the American
culture.
Author Todd Boyd also known as “Notorious Ph.D.”, is the Katherine and Frank
Price Endowed Chair for the Study of Race & Popular Culture and Professor of Critical
Studies in the USC School of Cinematic Arts. His book was published by DoubleDay
which is a very well known and respected company since the 1890s making it very
reliable. The goal of the source is shed light on the concept of Black culture in the
American culture through hip hop and basketball, however, its limited since it focuses
on the impacts of the culture and not the athletes’ experiences. This book is intended
towards people interested in the issue of race and the effects of black culture.
This source fits perfectly in my project s it discusses the problems that African
Americans go through from not just an athletic view but also a cultural one. It expands
on the ideas discussed in my previous source The Real Color of Money of blacks being
money makers in sports while uncontrollably being controlled by white supremacy. It
showcased how the idea of being rich, black, and famous is used against the culture as
a way of control which gave me better rounded understanding on how athletic
performance is tied with the idea of racial superiority.
Edwards, Harry. Race, Sports and Professionalism. Society, Transaction Publishers,
Rutgers University, 2000.
This journal talks about the professionalism of major sports and the role of race
that plays a huge part in an theltes potential career and success. The author’s claim is
black athletes suffer from the same social and moral issues in the sports as they do in
Ismail 5
part in the United States due to their race. Historically the issue of race contributed to
many different conflicts in the United States such as discrimination and violence.
Although state and federal laws were put in place to prevent such a thing, African.
Which the author uses as his reasons in order to support his claim. Those reasons
stated by Edwards are backed up by the use of many different statistical data and
research by respectable associations. One of them was the SAT scores of students and
its variance amongst black athletes/students. Another one was information in regards of
player consequences by the N.C.A.A. The author warrants, how black athletes
academic standings due to the poor conditions that were created by racism are a huge
contributing factor towards the issue.
The source is reliable since it directly discuss the subject and problem that I am
tackling and is also a published journal that is well respected by scholars since 1962.
The author is also credible since he is a sociology professor at the University of
California, Berkeley and the author of The Struggle That Must Be. The reason behind
this journal was to publish new ideas and findings in social sciences as well other fields
which included black athleticism and racism. The audience of this journal are social
science workers and students and ones that are interested in the idea racial dilemma in
the United States. That gives me an insider at the social science aspect of my issue to
better develop my research, however, it is limited in that is focuses more on the
historical conflict of racism rather than the current time.
This journal is specifically important in my research since it gave me insight on
the issue of racial conflicts in sports from a different viewpoint that starts with the black
athletes academic conditions before sports. It provided some specific details about the
educational system of black athletes and their struggles from young beginning. Which
directly connects to historical conflicts of racism discussed in my other source by author
Hoberman. I found it helpful because it gave a different perspective on the existence of
the issue, rather than just the typical race determines superiority in sports concept.
Harrison, Louis. “African American Racial Identity and Sport.” Taylor and Francis
Online, 2010, www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/1357332022000018823.
This article by author Louis Harrison dives directly in the ideas of racial identity
and its effects especially on African Americans in the world of sports. He claims that the
Ismail 6
African American identity of the youth directly relates to their sport and athletic
preferences development. That claim branches into subclaims such as the African
American overrepresentation in certain sports and how African American develop
certain ways of thinking that metaphorically creates the “Black” persona. Those reasons
are then further backed up by the use of the Cross Model and the Handbook of
Multicultural Counseling as evidence to the theory of developing the mindset of being
“black”. Harrison then warrants his article by stating the development of racial identity
gives a strong theoretical implication for the growth of the physical and athletic activity in
the African American youth.
Author Harrison is a professor of education at the University of Texas who has
published multiple articles and journals making him a credible source. While the article
was published on a respectable journal known as Sport, Education and Society on
Taylor & Francis Online making it very reliable. The article is intended to audience who
are interested in sports and are pursuing further knowledge of its racial consequences.
It is also intended for black audiences as a whole. However, the article is limited in the
essence of connecting the racial factor with the idea of exceptionalism very well.
The article’s goal was to shed light on what certain ways of developing and
thinking creates the idea of being “Black”. It ties directly to my research since being
black is one of the main factors causing racial tension in sports and causing the idea of
racial superiority and supremacy. It connects to a lot of my other sources and especially
the article by Paul Anderson and the idea of racism in sports being an ethical question.
That improved my understanding on why certain athletes behave the way they do and
what caused them to develop this mindset which will further expand my the power of my
research.
Hoberman, J. Soc. “The price of “Black dominance”.“ Springer-Verlag (2000) 37: 49.
https://doi.org/10.1007/BF02686175
In this article, Dr.John explains how the stereotype in the american society of
NBA stars and pop culture icons being mainly represented by African Americans is
really harmful and has negative consequences. He suggests that the society as a whole
has developed a lot, but there is some unfinished business including the goal of ending
this involuntary association of black men with athletic identity. He points out that the lack
Ismail 7
of interest from white people in the lives of minority groups and the reality of the
struggles they face is what created this race issues. In a similar argument to David
Leonard from my previous source, Boyd states the warrants acknowledging microaggression that is being constantly installed to control and have legislation over black
lives.
This source is well founded. It is reliable to use in the context of my research.
The article was published by Springer-Verlag which is a company known for publishing
peer-reviewed journals in science, humanities, technical and medical fields. Dr. John
