Thinking about Drinking
The national drinking age should be twenty-one years. In the United States, the minimum
legal drinking age is twenty-one years of age. There have been critics that think that it is not a
good idea for the age limit to be at twenty-one years. However, other people think that there is a
merit if the age limit for alcohol consumption remains at twenty-one years. the issue is even at
twenty-one years, the younger teenagers have found ways of acquiring alcohol. Such actions
have been noted to endanger their lives and other members of society (Crost et al, 116). Also,
there are health complications that may arise if the teenagers continue to ingest alcohol. This
essay will be elaborating on the merits and demerits of allowing teenagers to ingest alcohol.
Accidents especially where vehicles are involved is not unheard of. Accidents do
occur every day somewhere across the globe. However, in countries where eighteen-year-old
teenagers are allowed to drink alcohol, driving under influence is something that is recorded
every day (Drinking Age – Pros & Cons – Procon.Org). The comparison between the US and
the European countries people caught driving under influence are higher compared to the US.
This translates to more accidents that have been caused by drivers who are intoxicated by
alcohol. On the other hand, critics argue that accidents do occur regardless of drank driving
or any other phenomenon. The argument is whether young people drive under influence or
not, there will always be an accident that will occur. This means that alcohol should not be
criticized for being the sole cause of road accidents.

Public safety is key for any country. there have been cases where the young people
have been injured as they were trying to get away from law enforcers (Crost et al, 117). In
most cases, such teenagers would be drinking alcohol in areas that are not so safe even for
their own lives. If permitted to take alcohol, they would go to liquor stores that are licensed
and this would make them not run from law enforcers hence they will not be injured. The
amount of cash that the government uses to treat such injuries can be allocated to other uses.
However, the safety part of the story may not be entirely true. Statistics have proven that
some of the joints that harbor enjoyment joints that have alcohol tend to have violent
activities. Assault cases have been known to increase if a bar or a club is set up in an area.
Additionally, violent crimes also tend to follow licensed joints where alcohol is served
In the US there tends to be a double standard in the definition of an adult. The
eighteen-year-old teenagers are allowed to drive and also join the military but they cannot be
allowed to drink. They are also tasked with important issues like getting married and also
signing of important contracts. This is why some of the citizens think that the law should be
changed to allow young adults to ingest alcohol. However, alcohol consumption alters normal
brain functions (Drinking Age – Pros & Cons – Procon.Org). This makes a person not to have
a clear mind while executing a normal task. It is for this reason that the law terms contract
entered while intoxicated as null and void. Also, alcohol consumption lowers brain
development which reduces the reaction time of an individual
In essence, alcohol consumption for people below the age of twenty-one years should
not be permitted. This is because there is a lot of stakes that would create a negative ripple
effect. Also, some of the behaviors that people take for granted may begin at a tender age. It
has been noted people who begin taking alcohol at a young age have a high likelihood of

being addicted to other drugs like opioids. Besides at the age of twenty-one years, a young
person may choose not to drink because they may not cave due to peer pressure.
