Assignment: Local Public Health Response Paper

Length: 4 pages minimum- 6 pages max

Purpose: In community/public health nursing is it important to be able to identify, analyze, and prioritize public health challenges in a local community. Once you’ve identified the priority issue you then need to plan achievable interventions for the community and evaluate their success against established health outcomes.

        Skills:

• Identify and Assess a public health challenge in a local community
• Analyze available sources of health data related to the problem
• Apply a nursing or public health theory to guide you in addressing the health problem
• Evaluate current efforts to address the health problem by the local community
• Select an evidence based intervention to address the problem which you believe the community has the capacity to adopt

Knowledge: This assignment will help you become familiar with the following content knowledge in public health nursing:

• Sources of local, state, national population health data

Task:

Through your windshield survey, community leader or local resident interviews, local epidemiologic data, etc., identify a community problem (other than the one you are addressing in your clinical project) and describe the issue, what local interventions are being done to address the problem (strengths/assets) and what more could be done (challenges). You may select any public health issue that has struck you through your assessments and community clinical. (topic: substance abuse in Ludlow, MA – Hampden County)

As you describe the issue you have chosen, describe the upstream factors, social determinants of health and how they contribute/influence the issue. What is the Healthy People 2020 objective for your chosen issue (if there is one) and compare the data from either the town or county level – some of your towns will be too small for you to be able to find data specifically from the town – if that is the case use county data and compare it to the state average and national benchmarks from healthy people 2020.

Throughout your paper please highlight 4 epidemiological principles/concepts that you employed in analyzing the challenge in your community. This means you will include principles such as incidence, prevalence, or attack rate, or endemic, epidemic etc. Please bold the terms you are using within the text.
