Discussion Board 2 SWOT Analysis
According to Walston (2018, p. 183), SWOT analysis is an effective technique for
strategic planning that companies and organizations such as healthcare affiliations utilize in the
identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that are related to their internal
and external business conditions. In the healthcare setting, SWOT analysis is designed for the
utilization of the decision-making process in matters related to the provision of healthcare. It can
also be used for the assessment of the strategic position of the healthcare organization. By
gathering and analyzing data for the completion of SWOT analysis at Apollo CVHF Hospital in
Arlington, Virginia, it will be practical to establish the competitive advantage, limitations,
favorable, and unfavorable internal and external factors to the achievement of the healthcare
provision goals of the healthcare organization. Apollo CVHF Hospital is a heart institute and
hospital located in Arlington, VA.
Strengths
In SWOT analysis, the ‘S” stands for the strengths of the organization. Walston (2018)
asserts that the resources or the capabilities that healthcare organizations such as Apollo CVHF
Hospital in Arlington, VA can effectively utilize in the achievement of their healthcare provision
objectives. Firstly, Apollo CVHF Hospital has highly qualified and experienced personnel.
Cardiologists are specially trained and skilled in discovering, treating, and preventing infections
of the heart and blood vessels. All the cardiologists at the hospital have impeccable skills that
assure the heart patients that they are in safe hands rather than callous hands (Wijngaarden,
Scholten, & Wijk, 2016). Next, the services of the hospital are prompt. It has an emergency
department that is dedicated to addressing the most severe and delicate cases that are received.
Again, the hospital boasts of modern cardiac care technology and equipment for the delivery of
quality cardiology services. Nonetheless, the hospital is equipped with a well-maintained
pharmacy with skilled pharmacists. These include: up to date, patient monitors, EKG machines,
Cath Lab, Fluoroscopy, defibrillators, and cardiac ultrasounds among others. The pharmacy
provides medications, solutions, and safe combinations to the patients after prescriptions by the
cardiologists or recommendations by the pharmacists (Singh, Agarwal, Mahajan, & Bhardwaj,
2018).
Weaknesses
In SWOT analysis, the ‘W” stands for the weaknesses of the organization. Walston
(2018) asserts that weaknesses are the limitations, faults, or defects that prevent healthcare
organizations from achieving their objectives. These are the factors that indicate the lack of
expertise in the organization, the benefit that rivals have over an organization, lack of strategic
direction in the organization, and the need for improvement in the organization. The first
weakness is the high costs associated with the provision of cardiac care at Apollo CVHF
Hospital in Arlington, VA. Being a for-profit healthcare organization, the hospital charges a
hefty amount of money on cardiac care services such as heart surgery. This makes the services
unaffordable to ordinary people. Also, according to (Singh et al., 2018), the hospital is located at
a city meaning that its presence is not widely recognized in the suburban areas. Wijngaarden et
al. (2016) state, “Apollo CVHF Hospital in Arlington, VA fails to maximally capture the
attention of the patients from the suburban areas” (p. 102). Moreover, there are unrealistic
estimates by the medical professionals at the healthcare facility as far as computerized records
are concerned. Due to the eligibility criteria proposed by the current government, the standards
for computerized records are extremely ambitious that hardly any healthcare facilities can meet
them.
Opportunities
In SWOT analysis, the ‘O” stands for the opportunities for the organization. Walston
(2018) contends that in healthcare, opportunities are favorable conditions in the environment of
the organization. Singh et al. (2018) assert that opportunities indicate trends that the organization
can utilize to enhance its competitive advantage in the healthcare sector by tending to the
increased demand for a product or service. The most immediate opportunity that Apollo CVHF
Hospital in Arlington, VA can leverage on is the increased costs of healthcare in western nations.
Even though the costs in the hospital are high, other organizations charge more money for
cardiac care services. This indicates a rising opportunity for the hospital over its rivals
(Wijngaarden et al., 2016). Another opportunity is that the hospital can increase emergency
referral services to cater to the ever-evolving cardiac needs of different patients. With
technological advancements taking place every day, the hospital is presented with an opportunity
to leverage by adopting and implementing the most recent computerized record systems such as
Inpatient, Carecloud, and Epic. The organization can also cooperate with leading health
information technology suppliers to make the estimates by the medical professionals in
computerized records realistic (Singh et al., 2018).
Threats
In SWOT analysis, the ‘T” stands for the threats that face the organization. Walston
(2018) observes that threats are the unfavorable conditions in the environment of a healthcare
organization with the potential to damage the strategy of healthcare provision within the facility.
Wijngaarden et al. (2016) argue that threats may be barriers that constraint organizational
performance. Due to technological advancements and newer interventions in the medical
industry, a great number of healthcare facilities are evolving. Their services are transforming too.
This is one of the fundamental threats that Apollo CVHF Hospital might face in the short-andlong-term future. The addition of newer technologies is continuing at a quick rate and many
high-end healthcare affiliations are likewise adapting them at a quick pace to serve their patients
with their added and advanced services (Singh et al., 2018). Apollo CVHF Hospital in Arlington,
VA might encounter this threat. However, with increased brand trust, it is difficult to deter the
hospital from its place. Also, due to the constant transformation of healthcare insurances and
laws such as the Affordable Care Act of 2010, Apollo CVHF Hospital might be required to shift
its insurance and coverage plans and frameworks because of the growing number of uninsured
Americans. Being a for-profit organization, this can affect its intention of profit maximization
(Wijngaarden et al., 2016)
Conclusion and Biblical Integration
In summary, the SWOT analysis technique has internal and external factors that affect the
provision of cardiac care services at Apollo CVHF Hospital. 2nd Timothy 2:15 states, “Do your
best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed,
rightly handling the word of the truth” (New International Version, 2020). This verse illustrates
the need to understand that the meanings of the word may change. In a healthcare context, there
are a lot of changes that can be strategically managed using the SWOT analysis technique. In the
case of Apollo CVHF Hospital, strengths are the resources or the capabilities that healthcare
organizations such as Apollo CVHF Hospital in Arlington, VA can effectively utilize in the
achievement of their healthcare provision objectives. Weaknesses are the limitations, faults, or
defects that prevent Apollo CVHF Hospital from achieving its objectives. Opportunities are the
favorable conditions in the environment of the Apollo CVHF Hospital that it can maximally
leverage on for objective achievement. Threats are the unfavorable conditions in the environment
of Apollo CVHF Hospital with the potential to damage the strategy of healthcare provision
within the facility.
